Thomas Says
Eliminate “Hot Air”
State Senator R. P. (Bo)
Thomas, speaking before the
Young Democrats of Haywood
County in Canton Thursday night,
stated that the seasonably
adjusted 6 percent unemploy
ment rate during a period of
economic crisis is one indication
of possible reduced living
standards for the workers of our
next generation, when they come
into their job market.
Thomas stated that our
industrial and service complex
was financed by savings accumu
lated over several hundred years,
and that government policies and
inflation have almost extinguish
ed new capital formation.
"We are at the lowest levels of
capital formation in the history of
our republic; and in this period of
minimum growth of our gross
national product the textbook
implies an unemployment rate
considerably higher than the
reported 6 percent.”
"Our business managers have
determined that hiring additional
employees at present wages is
cheaper than energy or capital
expenditures, even if available,
and the additional workers do not
increase fixed costs. Such
determinations violate the theme
of the industrial revolution, from
whence much of the western
world’s higher standard of living
originated The espirit of our
work force has declined, and so
has our productivity. In many
cases more employees are
required to maintain production
at 1976 or 1977 levels. Higher
purchasing power and better
working conditions would result
from modernization of our
manufacturing facilities enlarg
ing workers’ confidence and
increasing productivity.”
Thomas stated that our
industrial complex must remain
competitive and efficient, if we
arc to keep our markets and

The clinical name for it is
conjuctivities, but you probably
know it simply as "pink eyes.”
This bothersome infection, caus
ed by the Koch-Weeks bacterium,
inflamates the delicate mem
branes that line the eyelids and
cover the eyeball, causing them
to become a bright red (hence the
name, "pink eye”). It is most
prevalent in the early spring and
fall and is prolonged by natural
irritants common during these
seasons, such as pollen and dust,
and bright light.
Some early symptoms of pink
eye include itchy eyelids and a
watery discharge from the tear
ducts. As the infection develops,
the discharge become thicker
and often “glues” the lids
together during sleep. Pink eye is
highly contagious and can last up
to a month. Special care should
be taken not to rub the eyes with
the hands and thus spread the
infection. Anyone with pink eye
should also use separate linens
and towels and separate lava
tories if possible.
Antibiotic ointments are gener
ally prescribed to reduce
the burning and are
usually effective within two or
three days. If the infection
persists beyond this time, your
physician may suspect an allergy
and prescribe treatment accord
ingly. Pink eye is not a serious
infection but can spread quickly
if not treated.
