the weekend. Saturday was nice
and Sunday was raining. Monday
morning it was nice again.
40 persons were killed in San
Salvador, El Salvador as
violence erupted at Mass for slain

Iranian officials insisted Sun

ciliatory messages from
President Carter admitting
mistakes in previous U. S. policy
toward Iran and said the White
house disclaimed them because
of domestic political problems.
Jesse Owens, the first man to
win four gold medals, died of lung
cancer. Owens was 22 when he
won the four gold medals in the
1936 Olympics in Berlin, shat
tering German leader Adolf
Hitler’s theory of Aryan
supremacy.

Community Schools
Program Approved
Polk County School Superin
tendent David Cromer has been
notified that the Community
Schools Program in Polk County
has been approved and will begin
this month. Anyone intersted in
applying for Director of the
program may apply to Mr.
Cromer.
New Garden Club
In Landrum
The newly organized garden
club in Landrum held its first
regular meeting at the home of
Melissa Sharpe on Thurs., March
27th. The Club members chose
Yellow Jasmine as their name.
Officers elected for the year
were: President, Dawn
Campbell; Vice. Pres., Melissa
Sharpe; Secretary, Carolyn Gib
son; Treasurer, Laura Becknell;
Corresponding Sec., Melinda
Green.
Car Burned
A 1979 Cadillac was found
burned in Holbert's Cove Sunday
by N C. Highway Patrolman
David McMurray. The car,
bearing South Carolina tags, had
been pushed off the road and
burned The owner had not been
located Monday morning.
REUNION FOR ST. LUKE’S
RETIRED EMPLOYEES
The retired employees of St.
Luke’s Hospital will hold a
reunion Wednesday at 12:30 p m.
at The Meeting Place in Tryon.
3 Suspects Held
In Armed Robbery
Three Buncombe County men
were jailed in lieu of $50,000 bond
each here Sunday oh charges
they robbed a man at gunpoint at
a rest area on Interstate 26 in
Polk County early Sunday
morning, county Deputy Robert
W. McKee reported.
Arrested were Robert Lee
Dorn, 25 and Timothy Eugene
McFee. 19, both of Arden, and
Dana Leon Dalton, 19, of
Asheville, the deputy said. Each
was charged with armed rob
bery.
Here is McKee’s account of the
incident:
Donald McDowell, a man in his
mid-30s from Mill Spring, was
driving home from Spartanburg,
S. C., on 1-26 about 5:45 a.m.
Sunday when he pulled his car
into a rest area some eight miles
from Tryon and went to sleep.
H was awakened by the sound
of glass shattering and found
himself starting at a .357-caliber
Magnum revolver through the
broken-out passenger-side win
dow.
The man holding the gun pulled
the hammer back and released it
slowly while demanding McDo
well's money. There was at least
one other man standing outside
the car.
McDowell handed the gunman
his cash — about $200 — and
everything else he had — keys,
wallet and pocketknife The men
forced McDowell to lie face down
in his car. The gunman sped
awav north on 1-26 in a blue

Charged
The Tryon Police and Polk
County Sheriff’s Department
were called to Harmon Field
Saturday afternoon when a fight
broke out between David Pruitt
and James Smith on the sidelines
during a softball game. Spec
tators separated them and they
were asked to leave. When Pruitt
got to his car, he reportedly got a
pistol and shot a number of times
in the air and then left. He has
been charged with discharging a
firearm into occupied property to
wit Harmon Field. Tryon Police
Officer Raphael Foy and Polk
County Deputy Robert Mcnee
investigated the incident.
