J. C. Baker, 54, of Route 1,
Union Mills died Saturday in
Asheville VA Medical Center.
Surviving are two sons. Perry
Baker of Union Mills and Mitch
Baker of Bostic; and a daughter,
Mrs. Gary Towery of Bosic; the
father, John G. Baker of Tryon;
three brothers, Clyde Baker of
Forest City, and Charles Baker
and John Baker of Tryon; three
sisters, Evelyn Lollar and Mrs.
Ervin Pittman of Rutherfordton
and Mrs. C. D. Goforth of
Morganton; and three grand
children.
Services were held at 2 p.m.
Monday in the chapel of
McMahan's Funeral Home. Dr.
Edward Brown officiated. Burial
was in Pisgah United Methodist
Church cemetery.
Minto Henderson of Tryon had
as week-end guest, Robert Condit
of Houston. Texas. Both served
aboard a D. E. during World War
II. Mr. Condit is owner of
Mercury Intl. which air freights
oil drilling equipment throughout
the world.

Mrs. Long
Esther Teeter Long, 83, of 900
Doubleday Road, Tryon, died
Friday in St. Luke’s Hospital.
A native of Johnstown, Pa., she
was a daughter of the late Henry
and Gertrude Weyland Teeter.
She was the wife of the late John
W. Long and was a resident of
Tryon for six months.
Surviving are two daughters,
Mrs. Phyllis Rutledge of Tryon
and Mrs. Barbara Seidel of
Denver, Colo ; a son, John Long,
Jr of Calgary, Canada; a sister,
Mrs. Gertrude Reed of Elmya, N.
Y.; 15 grandchildren and a
great-grandchild.
Services and burial were held
in Johnstown.
McFarland Funeral Chapel
was in charge of local arrange
ments.
Gillis Cantrell
Gillis Augusta Cantrell, 72, of
Route 1, Chesnee, died Friday in
St. Luke’s Hospital after a long
illness.
He was a member of the Green
River Baptist Church. He was the
son of the late Perry and Annie
Blanton Cantrell of Polk County,
N. C.
Surviving are his wife,
Josephine Hines Cantrell; a
daughter, June Ann Cantrell of
Chensee; a brother, Wallace
Cantrell of Green Creek, N. C.;
and three sisters, Mrs. Carlie
Roddy, Mrs Correll Roddy and
Mrs. Willia Mae Millard of Green
Creek.
Graveside services were held
at 4 pm. Sunday in Sunset
Memorial Park. The Revs.
James Green and Broughten
Strickland officiated.
McMahan’s Funeral Home was
in charge of arrangements.
