PHIZES Up until a few decades ago it was a custom of governments and businesses to offer large prizes to those who solved problems or invented things that would help a lot of people. Maybe it’s time to resume that custom, and offer prizes for the best ideas in solving the energy crisis. Judging by the past, offering prizes really works. Bark in the days of sailing ships for example, the British Navy offered a large prize to anyone inventing a clock accur ate enough to help plot a ship’s position after being at sea for a month. All over Europe, inventors went to work, trying to win‘the prize. Soon one of them succeeded. Millions of us have benefitted from that invention. When the Chicago world’s fair of 1893 wanted a thrilling new ride, they offered a big prize. George Ferris won by inventing original, gigantic Ferris Wheel, that carried more than a thousand passengers at one time. Lindbergh flew the Atlantic in an attempt to win a 25-thousand- dollar prize. Would offering prizes help solve today’s energy crisis? There’s no guarantee of course, but it sure wouldn’t hurt to try — WRAL-TV Editorial Tryon Dally Bulletin. Fr i..
