Senator Kennedy rejoiced over
his narrow Arizona victory over
President Carter, but Carter
picked up big blocks of delegates
in South Carolina and Virginia.
Jennifer and Michael were
again the most popular names for
children born in New York City
last year. In order of preference
the other popular girls names are
Jessica, Nicole, Melissa,
Michelle, Lisa, Elizabeth, Maria,
Christine and Danielle. The other
popular boys names are David,
Jason, Christopher. John,
Joseph. Anthony, James. Robert
and Daniel.
Severiano Ballesteros of Spain
captured the Masters Golf
Tournament with a 4-stroke
victory. His 275 total, with a 72 in
the final round, made him the
youngest winner of the Masters
and only the second foreigner

Spartans Named
By Libertarians
Two Spartanburg area men
were among candidates nomi
nated at Saturday’s Libertarian
Party Convention in Columbia.
Tom Waldenfels, 25, of Lan
drum will be the party’s
candidate for Congress from the
3rd District. Tom Campbell, 25,
of Blacksburg, will seek the 4th
District seat.
The party, which was certified
in South Carolina just a year ago,
also tentatively nominated form
er University of South Carolina
professor Phil Dematteis to run
for the U. S. Senate seat held by
Democrat Ernest F. Hollings. —

Bagwell Named
Roads Division Head
Friday's Spartanburg Herald
reported that Joe Bagwell of
Landrum had been named acting
director fo the Spartanburg
County Road Maintenance De
partment. contrary to a recom
mendation by County Council.
Bagwell is an assistant to
former Spartanburg County
Supervisor Jack West.
Joel Dermid, county engineer
and acting public works director,
said that he was responsible for
making the decision and felt that
Bagwell was the logical fellow for
the job
Councilmen had suggested that
their original intent was to leave
West in charge of road
maintenance until his elected

John Austin
Retains Seat
District 1 incumbent John S
Austin picked up five votes in the
recheck of the School Trustee
election and was declared the
winner over Charles R. (Bobby)
Warren. The unoffical count had
shown a 342 vote tie between
Austin and Warren. Austin joined
James M (Jimbo) Petty and
John A. Morrow for the three
seats on the Board.

Senior League
Tryouts Today
The Polk County Senior League
tryouts will be held today at 5
p.m at Harmon Field. The sign
up for the various teams will be
done at this time.
To Compete In
Math Contest
CULLOWHEE — Some 26 Polk
County students will compete in
the 10th annual Western Caroling
University High School Mathe
matics Contest April 24 in Hoey
Auditorium at WCU.
The students will be among
more than 500 contestants
representing 45 Western North
Carolina schools. They will be
competing in four divisions —
Algebra I. Algebra II, Geometry
and Comprehensive. *
Winners in the senior-level
Comprehensive Division who
score in the top five per cent not
to exceed 10 students, will qualify
for the state high school math
contest to be held in May
