hostages “in jeopardy” in Iran
and that he doesn’t know "how

Blaming inflation, the Postal
Service asked approval Monday
to increase charges for mailing
most types of letters from 15 to 20
cents, effective early next year.
Increases are also asked for
other types of mail.

The Landrum Parks and
Recreation Department would
like to begin a swim team at the
Brookwood Park Pool. The

person or persons who may be

pool staff on developing a swim

Rotary Luncheon
Is Thursday
Luncheon will be served at The
Dinner Bell on Thursday (not
Friday), April 14 for those who
were not able to attend the
Rotary Ann Dinner. The time is
12:30 and there will be no
program.
Jeri Hill To
Represent Polk
Jeri Hill will represent Polk
County at the Carowinds Invita
tional 4-H Talent Show on
Saturday, May 3rd at 2 p.m. in
the Midway Music Hall. Jeri was
selected last Saturday in the
screening at East Lincoln High
School. She was one of three tup
acts at the Polk County 4-H
Funfest — the others being
Lesley Bush who played the piano
and the tap dance duo of Windi
Wolfe and Tammy Thompson.
Jeri will sing and play on the
piano, music and lyrics which she
wrote. She is the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. James H. Hill of Rt. 1,
Tryon.
At the screening 16 counties
sent 3 acts and one from each
county was selected.
PRE-SCHOOL DAY
AT STEARNS SCHOOL
Monday, April 28th will be
pre-school day at Stearns School
in Columbus. Parents are asked
to bring, not send their child.

immunization against Tetanus,
Diptheria, Whooping Cough,
Polio and Measles, including
“Rubella.”

Annual Rabies Clinic
To Begin May Sth
County veterinarians, will
begin giving rabies vaccinations
on Monday, May Sth. This year
the Rabies Clinics will run for one
week, Monday through Friday.
North Carolina State Law
requires owners of every dog four
months old and over, to be
vaccinated against Rabies at the
required intervals. Dogs are
required to wear metal tags at all
times, otherwise they are subject
to being picked up and confined to
the county animal shelter.
Watch the dates and locations
of clinics.
The county animal control
officer will be convassing the
county to enforce the required
immunization laws.
Any person having questions
concerning the rabies clinic
should call Paul Toney at the
Polk County Health Department
894-8271.
Senior Citizens
Meets Monday
The April meeting of the Polk
County Senior Citizens Club will
be at the Meeting Place on
Monday, April 28th at 5:30,
beginning with a covered dish
supper. The speakers will be
General Harry Evans, president
of the Polk County Community
Foundation, and John Landrum,
past president, who will also
show pictures relative to the
work of the Foundation. All are
welcome.

Meets Thursday
The Gownesville Community

Democrats from across the
state will hear Mrs. Rosalynn
Carter at the annual Jefferson-
Jackson Day Dinner in Raleigh
on April 26.
Mrs. Betty Speir, chairman of
the N. C Democratic Executive
Committee said the nation’s First
Lady will speak to more than
2,000 state Democrats at the
Raleigh Civic Center at the 7 p.m.
