Man Killed In
Wreck Here
Mark Leon Gilbert, 24, of
McBee. S. C. was killed in a
one-car accident on No. 9 Sunday
at 5:30 p.m. near Polk Central
High School.
Highway Patrolman David
Satterfield said that Gilbert,
driving south in a ’75 Plymouth
lost control of his car in a curve,
went off the right side of the road
and rolled over. The automobile
traveled 470 feet out of control
according to Patrolman Satter
field.
A passenger in the vehicle,
James Roy Robbis, 21, of
Spartanburg was taken to St.
Luke’s Hospital where he was
treated for bruises and abra
sions and released.
Patrolman Satterfield said that
the vehicle was traveling at a
high rate of speed when it went
out of control.

Home Burned
An unoccupied new home was
destroyed by fire Saturday
morning on S. Bomar St. in
Landrum. The fire was believed
to have been started by lightning.
The new home was listed for
sale by Landrum Real Estate.
The alarm was turned in about
6 a.m. and the Landrum Fire
Department responded immedi
ately but the fire was coming
through the roof when the
firemen arrived.
Seriously Injured
Monday’s Spartanburg Herald
reported that Robert Brown of
Pickens, S. C. remained in
serious condition Sunday night in
Spartanburg General Hospital
from injuries he received in an
automobile accident Saturday
afternoon on Hwy. 14 near
Gowensville
Brown suffered head injuries
and was transferred from St.
Luke’s Hospital to Spartanburg
General Hospital.
Johnny Robert Lindsey, 24, of
Landrum was killed in the
accident.
The Landrum Rescue Squad
had two units at the accident,
Inman Rescue Squad had a unit
and the Landrum Fire Depart
ment sent a fire truck to the
scene.

$370.36 For Cancer
Probably the most successful
bake-sale in Tryon’s history has
brought a total of $370.36 to the
American Cancer Society’s Polk
County Crusade. Bake-sale
Chairman Carrie Lee Massey
announced the results of the April
12 event, managed with the help
of the following Crusaders, not to
mention all who contributed
baked goods: Katherine Fox,
Ruth Simpson, Frances Woods,
Louise Payton, and Kevin
Massey.
Says Miss Massey, commen
ting on April 12th very wet
weather: “It may have been
raining all morning the day of our
sale, but under that awning the
sun was shining!”. — Reporter
Pledges Sorority
DANVILLE, Ky. - Cathy
Davis, a junior at Centre College
of Kentucky, recently pledged the
Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. She
is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Seth R Davis of Rt. 2, Box 240 A.
Mill Springs.
This is the first lime in its
161-year history that Centre has
had sororities on campus.
Ninety-nine women pledged three
sororities during a colonization
process which ended in three
days of meetings March 7-9. The
sororities were invited to campus
earlier this school year by a
group of women students seeking
the establishment of sororities
Miss Davis is a 1977 graduate of
Tryon High School. She is also a
member of the softball team at
Centre.
