There is no official weather
report for Thursday, but it was an
ideal day. Friday morning was
more of the same.
Federal officials made prepar
ations Thursday to airlift
homeless Cuban refugees to a
“tent city” at Eglin Air Force
Base and detained 25 immigrants
suspected of being criminals in
their homeland.
Soviet troops clashed with
Afghan high school students last
week that left at least 57 youths
dead and hundreds injured
according to reports.
Tomorrow the Polk County
Schoo! Board will be elected. All
townships in the county, except
Tryon, will vote for three
members, one each from Coopers
Gap, Columbus and Green Creek.
Also being held at the same
time will be the Democratic and
Republican Primaries. The two
parties will name their nominees
for the General Election in
November. The polling places
are as follows: Precinct 1, Tryon.

Charles B. Lott
Charles B. Lott was named the
Polk County Jaycee Distinguish
ed Service Award Winner
Thursday night at the Distinuish-
ed Service Award and Installa
tion Banquet at the Tryon
Elementary School cafeteria.
The Award was presented by
Outgoing president Carroll
Barnette.
Mr. Lott was named the Town
of Tryon Manager in 1974. A
native of Scotch Plaines, N. J , he
is a graduate of Franwood High
School. Wake Forest University
and has done graduate work at N.
C. State University. He was an
outstanding student and athlete
in high school and in college was
a member of the University
Choir, Varsity Track, Delta
Sigma Phi Fraternity and
Interfraternity Council. He was a
member of Graduate Association
of Public Affairs and also a
member of International City

New Business Wins Scholarship

12th at Lynn in the building next
to the green church building.
Janet Butler (Mrs. Paul) owner,
will feature fabrics and notions.
Mrs. Butler said that the show
would feature the famous "Cloth
of Gold” and other fabrics galore
as well as Simplicity Patterns.
There will also be a seamstress.

Mike Sprouse signed a grant-in-
aid Tuesday to play his final two
years of college baseball at N. C.
State.
Wolfpack coach Sam Esposito
filled a defensive and speed gap
with Sprouse. The right-handed
hitter has stolen 24 bases in 25
attempts this season for the
Cavaliers. Though his batting
averaged has slipped to .265 from
a 1979 mark of .330, the Tryon
native has scored 28 runs.
