No official weather report for

The Democratic Lt. Governor’s
race was still too close to call
when we went to bed Tuesday
night, but Lt. Gov. Jimmy Green
held a thin lead over House
Spaker Carl Stewart. Former
University of North Carolina
Athletic Director William Cobey
was unopposed in his bid for the
Republican nomination for Lt.
Gov.
Pres. Jimmy Carter and
Ronald Reagan picked up wins in
North Carolina. Tennessee and
Indiana Tuesday while Sen.
Kennedy and George Bush took
the District of Columbia.

sectionals at UNC at Asheville at

Landrum Lions
Are Honored
The Landrum Lions Club
received a number of awards at
the Lions Convention in Colum
bia. S. C. last weekend. The Club
was named the No. 2 Club in the
District and was given an award
for the Mid-Winter meeting
The Landrum Club Bulletin,
edited by Paul Blauvolt was
given the Best Bulletin Award.
Attending the Convention were
District Governor and Mrs. Bob
Walker. Cabinet Secretary-Trea
surer and Mrs Ted Smith.
President Jimmy Ashmore, J. L.
Shields. Mike Ravan, John
Rountree and Paul Blauvolt.

Cherokee 9-6
(Wins Conference)
The Tryon High School base-
ball team defeated Cherokee 9-6
Tuesday afternoon at Cherokee
and won their third straight
Appalachian Conference Champ
ionship The win gave them an 8-2
record with one game left. (Polk
Central today.)
Barry Skipper was the big gun
for the Tigers as he had 2 hits
and 3 RBIs. He also went all the
way on the mound as he scattered
six hits Jeff Sherer had three
singles for the Tigers.
Cherokee now has 7-3 record,
but even if the Tigers lose their
final game they have defeated
Cherokee 2 out of 3 times.

Lancaster Approved
For Fire Fighter
Hall of Fame
The nomination of the late
Pickney Charles Lancaster of
Landrum for induction into the
Fire Fighter Hall of Fame, was
unanimously approved by the
Hall of Fame Committee at a
meeting on April 28th.
A certificate will be presented
to Mr Lancaster’s family at the
President’s Breakfast held dur
ing the Annual Conference of the
S. C. State Firemen’s Associa
tion. Saturday. May 31st at the
Carolina Inn. 937 Assembly
Street. Columbia, S. C. at 8 a.m.
Mr Lancaster was a charter
member of the Landrum Fire
Department and served as chief
for many years.
GIRL SCOUT
COURT OF AWARDS
The annual Girl Scout Court of
Awards for Polk Neighborhood
will be held at the Columbus
Presbyterian Church, May 19th
at 7 p m All Polk County and
Tryon City Troops are requested
to be present to receive pins,
badges and awards. There will be
a fly-up ceremony for Brownies
going up to Junior, a candlelight
rededication ceremony and adult
volunteer recognition.
Refreshments will be served by
the Columbus Cadettes who are
working on the social dependabil
ity challenge. The public is
invited

Selected For
Girls State
Denise Radford, a junior at
Tryon High School and Jewel
Holbert, a junior at Polk Central
High School have been selected to
attend the 41st annual “Tar Heel
Girls State” session from June 8
— 14 at UNC at Greensboro.
The selections were based on
definite interest in government,
leadership, character, honesty
scholarship, cooperativeness'
community participation and
service activities. Tar Heel Girls
State is a practical application of
