nation's next secretary of state
The vote was 94-2. Sen. Jesse
Helms. IR-NC) said his vote
against Muskie was the most
difficult of his Senate career.
Helms said he voted no because
Muskie supports the central
thurst of the Carter Administra
tions foreign policy which Helms
thinks is an unmitigated
disaster."
Cuban refugees continue to
arrive in Florida by the hundreds
and Florida has asked for more
aid from the U. S. and also from
the Central American nations.
A federal judge. Edward
Schwartz, has ruled unconsitu-
tional the 1971 amendment to the
Civil Rights Act re

Hole-In-One For
Col. Joe Knowlton
Col. Joe Knowlton owned Tryon
Country Club’s 5th hole Wednes
day afternoon. May 7! Using a
4-iron on the 193 yard par 3 fifth
hole, his tee shot bounced on the
green and rolled into the cup for
the first hole-in-one at T. C C. in
the 1980s. Then, the second time
around, playing the same hole
(now No. 14) from the back tee at
210 jards. his 3-iron shot reached
the green and he holed his 20-foot
putt for a deuce

and Ed Galloway. Col. Knowl
ton's score for the round was
37-39 for a 76 total. Knowlton
started to play the game at the
conclustion of WWII in 1945 and
had his first hole-in-one in 1964
Polk Central Bands
Spring Concert
The annual spring concert by
the Polk Central Bands will be
tonight at 7:30 at the Mill Spring
School Auditorium All three
bands will perform during the
concert. This will include the
Beginner Band, the Eighth Grade
Band and the High School Band
This will be the final perform
ance of the High School Band
before their trip to Toronto
Canada for the International
Music Festival from May 17
through May 19
