Tonight the Columbus Town
Council meets at 7 p m.; the
Tryon Town Council meets at
7:30; the Tryon School Board
meets at 7:30; and the Polk
County School Board meets at 8.
Tuesday at 8 p.m. the Tryon
Concert Association will present

"La Boheme" at the Fine Arts
Center.
The hybrid rhododendrons are
beautiful now. The nurserymen
have developed so many different
shades of reds, pinks, purples,
yellows, etc. The mountain laurel
is blooming too

Take Sectional
Doubles Title
The Tryon High School doubles
team of David Vining and Bryan
Corpening took the Western
Tennis Sectionals title Thursday
afternoon at UNC at Asheville.
They defeated Rick Mastman
and Jamie Miller of Tuscola 6-4,
7-5. The Tryon duo were
runner-ups last year and were
Seeded No. 1 this year.
Craig Hall upset his Asheville
High teammate Doug Maynard
7-5, 6-2 to take the singles crown.
Maynard, the defending state
champion, had been seeded No. 1
and Hall No. 2. *
The Asheville High team
dominated the team scoring with
48 points and took the team title.
Tryon was runner-up with 15
points, followed by McDowell and
A. C. Reynolds with 14 each,
Tuscola and Sylva-Webster with
13 each. Mitchell 12, Erwin 10,
Enka 8, Pisgah 7, Brevard 5, Polk
Central and T. C Roberson 4
each, Hendersonville and Owens
3 each. Franklin 2, North
Buncombe 1 and Cherokee 0
Hatch Mill Has
Bloodmobile Visit
The Polk County Chapter
American Red Cross held a
Bloodmobile visit at Hatch Mill
on Thursday. May 8th
Assisted by volunteers from the
Columbus community. 34 pints
were collected from 39 employees
of Hatch Mill

was a delegate to the 55th Garden
Club of North Carolina Annual
meeting which was held at the
Hilton Inn. Wilmington. N. C.

who is State chairman of Garden
Centers and Councils, President
of the Asheville Garden Club and
a member of the Daffy-Jills
Garden Club of Tryon served as
one of the hostesses of the
District I State Presidents
reception and organized a cruise
on the Cape Fear River during
the convention.

At the regular meeting of the
Visiting Nurse Assn on May 8,
Mrs. Whitmire reported travel
ing 630 miles during the month of
March to make 111 patient visits
and 790 miles in April to make 119
visits.
Mrs. Henry Coward. Chair
man. announced that Dr.
Freeman Brooks had accepted
his appointment to the Board to
take the place of Dr. Joseph
Placak Dr Brooks will serve
with Dr Austin Woody as
medical advisor to the Board.
It was also announced that the
next meeting of the Board will
take place at the home of Mrs

Edges Tryon 5-4
The Polk Central Patriots
baseball team defeated the Tryon
Tigers 5-4 Thursday afternoon at
Harmon Field. Quint Petty had a
two-run homer in the third inning
for the Patriots. The Tigers
ended their conference record
with an 8-3 record while Polk
Central is 5-4.
