perfect.
The prime lending rate
dropped to 164 percent at some
major banks Monday, reflecting
a steep drop in the demand for
business loans as the economy
sinks into a recession.
A school bus overturned on top
of a compact car Monday
afternoon in Raleigh, killing the
driver of the car and injuring 32
students on the bus. The bus was
taking the children home about 3
p.m. when the accident happen
ed.
The Cuban government said
Monday that its MIG pilots who
sank a Bahamian patrol boat,
killing four crewmen, mistook
the vessel for a "pirate ship.”
Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. is the

HERE TVESDAY
The first round of the N. C.
State Baseball playoffs will be
held Tuesday at 4 pm. at
Harmon Field Tryon, the winner
of the Appalachian Conference
will play Andrews the No. 2 team
in the Smoky Mountain Confer
ence. Admission will be $1 50.
Election Board Asks
District Attorney
To Investigate
Election Disturbances
In a special meeting Monday
afternoon the Polk County
Election Board voted to ask
District Attorney Leonard Lowe
to investigate the disturbances
in Green Creek Precincts No. 9
and 10 which allegedly occurred
during the Primary election on
Tuesday, May 6th.
Both incidents allegedly involv
ed Kenneth Horne. Election
Board Chairman Paul Gilbert
made the motion for the
investigation which was second
by Mrs. Annie Bell Gilbert. Hall
Arledge, the Republican member
of the Board abstained. The
District Attorney will be asked to
take whatever action is appropr
iate.
In separate action Buford
Swain of Green Creek Precinct 10
has taken out a warrant charging
Kenneth Horne with simple
assault with assault and battery
and Mrs. Annie Mae Walker of
Green Creek Precinct 9 has taken
out a warrant charging Kenneth
Horne with communicating a
threat.
UDC Meets Friday
The Campobello Chapter of the
United Daughter of the Confed
eracy will meet Friday at 3 p.m.
al the home of Mrs. Frank
Crowell al 112 Doubleday Road,
Tryon Mrs. Hubert Culbreth will
be the co-hostess.

Polk Central 7-6
In Eight Innings
The Tryon Tigers won the
Appalachian Conference baseball
crown outright Monday afternoon
at Harmon Field when they
squeezed by the Polk Central
Patriots 7-6 in 8 innings. This is
the third straight year that the
Tigers have won the baseball
title.
David Mills knocked in the
winning run with a single in the
bottom of the eighth. Mills also
had a solo home run and collected
four RBIs Jeff Sherer and Bruce
Butler also had two hits each in
the Tigers 11-hit attack.
Barry Skipper scattered 6 hits
as he went all the way for the
Tigers. Jeff Miller also went the
distance for Polk Central and
absorbed the loss.
The Tigers ended their regular
season with a 9-3 conference
record and a 9-6 record overall.
The Patriots Conference record
is 5-5.

Columbia, S. C. and Mrs. Leona

Jason Key wins
Pinewood Derby
The county-wide Cub Scout
Pinewood Derby was held Friday
night at the 4-H & Youth Center in
Columbus. Pack 150 of Tryon
swept the first four places. The
winner was Jason Key’s car.
Following Jason were Trey
Fincher 2nd; Brian Guffey, 3rd;
David Erskine 4th and Wayne
Harris of Troop 157 of Sunny
View 5th.
These local winners will go to
Hickory to compete in the
Piedmont Council championship.
