19, 1980 Mrs. Elizabeth D. Gray and the District Church School Superintendent, Mrs. Della H. Jackson attended the Winston- Salem-Greenville District Con ference of the C.M.E. Church held at Russell Tabernacle C.M.E. Church, Spindale, April 24, 25, and 26. Saturday April 26 was Youth Day. The church was crowded for the contest of Youth Choirs and Orations. We were pleased to see our neighbor, St. Luke C.M.E. Church of Tryon bring home the First Prize in each division. Kimberly Porter, daughter of Mrs. Ruth Porter received First Place Award in Speaking and St. Luke Junior Choir under the direction of Mrs. Esther W. Robinson received First Place Award in Singing. Our congratulations to St. Luke Youth and their leaders. The pastor of New Salem and Stony Knoll C.M.E Churches, Rev. R. L. Thompson of Spartanburg, S. C. received his Master’s Degree in Ministry at the Bible Institute of Columbia, S. C. April 1, 1980. Our congratula tions to him. Tryon Daily Bulletin, Mon. May Stony Knoll News By Mrs. Della IL Jackson Our small community has had its share of happenings during the last several months. Isaac Mills’ first time being sick, his stay and surgery in St. Luke’s Hospital. Theodore Suber’s car wreck, his stay and treatment in Spartanburg General Hospital; the death of Mrs. Birdie Mills; Mrs. Evelyn D. Petty’s treatment and stay in Asheville Mission Memorial Hospital and her stay and surgery in St. Luke’s Hospital. Alonzo Petty’s first time being sick, his stay and surgery in St. Luke’s Hospital; the tragic death of Bert Evans Moore and now Mrs. Elizabeth D. Gray is in St. Luke’s Hospital and has undergone surgery. We have also lost from our community several families who have moved away. Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. Petty bought a new home and moved to Forest City. Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Coxe moved to Morganton. Miss Doris Miller bought a new home and moved to Forest City and Mrs. Bert Moore and children have moved to Melvin Hill Community. Our community has lost 19 residents in less than four months.
