Wednesday morning was perfect. The air was cool and clean, and the sun was shining brightly. Geologists warned 50,000 resi dents of two small cities in Washington Tuesday, that a lake created by mud and debris from erupting Mount St. Helens could go cascading down the mountain at any time. Volcanic ash from Mount St. Helens could plunder America’s bread and fruit baskets. The geologists told Agriculture Secre tary Bob Bergland that 2 inches of dust already cover the wheat fields of Washington, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming and part of North Dakota. Four to 5 inches, they speculated, would destroy the wheat crops in those states and damage the Canadian breakfast provinces of Manitoba and Saskatchewan Also immedi ate concern was the fruit trees in the Pacific Northwest, covered with 2 to 3 inches of volcanic dust. A light rain would create sulfuric acid from the dust and the acid would destroy this year’s fruit crop and many trees. Quebec voters decided Tuesday that they didn't want to move Continued On Back Page Youth Center To Present “Bye, Bye, Birdie” The Tryon Youth Center Board of Directors has announced that Debbie Goode will direct the Tryon Youth summer play, "Bye Bye, Birdie" which will be presented July 17, 18, 19 at the Fine Arts Center Pam McNeil will be the musical director. Tryout- dates and location will be announced later. The eligible age for participation will be seventh grade through graduating high school seniors. Polk Central Sports Banquet The Polk Central Winter and Spring Sports Banquet will be held Friday at 6:30 p m at the school cafeteria. SUMMA CUM LAUDE SPARTANBURG, S. C. - Joyce Ann Payne of Tryon was among a graduating class of 224 seniors at Wofford College who were awarded bachelor degrees by the college during com mencement ceremonies Sunday, May 18. She received a B. A. degree in economics (Summa Cum Laude). She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Payne. ON DEAN’S LIST Among those on the Dean’s List at Pembroke State University during the spring semester was Julian Clark Moffitt, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Moffitt of Tryon. Promoted Kaye A. Williams David L. Phillips, Jr., Vice President and City Executive Officer of the Northwestern Bank. Tryon, has announced the promotion of Kaye A. Williams to Assistant Branch Executive Officer. Prior to her promotion, Mrs. Williams was Marketing and Business Development Offi cer for the bank. She joined Northwestern in 1977 as Adminis trative Secretary after working with First National Bank of S. C. for 12 years. Mrs. Williams has recently completed requirements and received her BA degree in Finance and Business Adminis tration from Limestone College. She also was awarded an Advanced certificate, the highest certificate given, by the Ameri can Institute of Banking in May of this year.
