Over 100,000 Cubans have entered the country in the past three weeks. Many veteran groups are complaining that the Cuban refugees are getting psychiatric treatment at a Veterans Administration hospital in Florida while veterans are being kept on a waiting list for treatment. The Tampa VA Medical Center has reserved 40 hospital beds for Cubans and the Continued On Back Page Man Killed In Motorcycle Wreck A motorcycle rider, identified as Gordon Paul Collins of Valley Falls, S. C. was killed in a motorcycle accident on a curve on Hwy. 176 on Saluda Mountain. The motorcycle was found on Hwy. 176 and reported at 12:12 a.m. Tuesday. The Polk County Sheriff's Department located the body about 70 feet below the road, down the embankment and called the Polk County Rescue Squad for assistance. The motorcycle apparently hit the guard rail and Mr. Collins was thrown over the guard rail against a tree and then rolled to the bottom of the embankment. Patrolman David McMurray investigated the accident. REPORT FROM WOODLAND PARK Progress on Woodland Park is progressing according to sche dule. Approximately one-third of the trails have been constructed. Completion is scheduled for the end of the summer. A small parking lot on Chestnut Street behind Hearthstone Inn has been completed. The Spartanburg Herald re ports that in the General Session Court Tuesday, Steve Allen Lockhart, 34, of Tryon, was found guilty of driving under the influence (2nd offense) and was sentenced to one year and $1,000, suspended to four months or $300 and one year probation and attendance at the Alcohol Safety Action Program. Arson Attempt Is Foiled The Polk County Sheriff’s Department foiled an attempted arson Tuesday about 4:45 p.m. The Sheriff’s Dept, was notifed that 2 young boys and 2 young girls were in the vacant house of the late W. B. Hammett on Ioka Hills. Deputy Allen Rickman said as they arrived at the scene, the 4 teenagers took off running. He said that the house smelled of coal oil or kerosene and that they found some newspapers and toilet tissue that had been set on fire. A 10” square spot was burned in the floor and a rug slightly burned. They took out after the teenagers who split and got away. Deputy Rickman said that one of the boys was very thin and extremely tall.
