No ollicial weather report for
Wednesday, hut it was perfect for
outside activities. Thursday-
morning was more of the same.
The area needs a good rain, but
none is forecast until next week.
Japanese Prime Minister Ma-
sayoski Ohira died early Thurs
day morning of a heart attack. He
was 70.
The July-August 1980 issue of
"Needlecraft for Today” has
items you can make money on at
Bazaars. Many of the projects
were created by talented needle-
worker Midge Edwards of
Columbus and are designed to be
produced for a very small
amount of money.

Shelf sent us a clipping from the
Chicago Tribune on Nina Simone.
Miss Simone is now in Phila
delphia after being in Europe the
last couple of years.
The Biltmore House has
become “The Morley Mansion”
as the Tim Conway-Don Knotts
comedy-suspense feature, “The
Private Eyes” is being filmed
there. Most of the filming is being
done in the late afternoons and
evenings. This is the second
major film production for
Biltmore House since “Being
There” starring Peter Sellers

Two' Teachers Retire
At Stearns School
’Two teachers have announced
their retirement after this year at
Stearns School and both have the
last name of Smith. Mrs. Paul T.
Smith (Colona) is retiring after
30 years and Mrs. Sidney Smith
(Helen) is retiring after 34 years.
Mrs. Colona Smith is a native of
Henderson County. She graduat
ed from Mills River High School
and Western Carolina Teachers
College with a B. S. degree. She
taught at Robbinsville for 3
years, at Mill Spring for 1 year, at
Tryon for 1 year and has been at
Stearns School for the past 25
years.
She has taught the fourth grade
most of these years and when she
wasn’t teaching the fourth grade,
she was teaching the Sth grade.
She and her husband, Paul,
have two children, Thomas E.
Smith of Charlotte and Miss Rita
Smith of Columbia, S. C. Mrs.
Smith says that she is planning to
sew for her two grandchildren.
She is going to spend more time
in her garden and do some of the
things that she has been wanting
to do, but hasn’t had time for. She
is a member of the Columbus
Baptist Church.
Mrs. Helen T. Smith is a
graduate of Landrum High
School and Asheville Teachers
College with a B. S. degree. She
taught four years at Mill Spring, 1
year at Marion and 2 years at
Landrum before coming to
Stearns. She has the unique
distinction of having her two

Landrum Council
The Landrum City Council met
Tuesday night at the City Hall.
Dan Young. Recreational Direc
tor. gave a report of the
recreational activities and pre
sented plans for the sports
complex to be constructed at the
(). P. Earle School.
An Affirmative Action Plan for
the Community Development
Block Grant Program was
presented to the council for
study.
Council approved a request for
a water bill adjustment for Cindy
Nodine.
Council approved a purchase of
a new engine for one of the police
cars.
Mayor informed the council
that a Sex Discrimination
Complaint has been filed against
the town by Mrs. Judy Greenway
Collins, who claims she was
discriminated against when the
town hired its last policeman.
A resolution was passed in
honor of the late Pickney C.
Lancaster, who served as fire
chief in Landrum for a number of
years. He was inducted into the S.
C. Firemen’s Hall of Fame in
May.
Tim Cogdell was named super
intendent of the Landrum water
and waste water treatment
plants.
Bahai Group
A Bahai Discussion Group will
meet Sunday at 4 p.m. at the
Mills-Mosseller Studio off Hwy.
108 at Lynn Bridge.
Jaycee Tennis
Tournament
Sat. and Sun.
The Polk County Jaycee Tennis
Tournament for ages 12 through
18 will be held Saturday and
Sunday at Harmon Field. The
Courts will be closed to the public
during tournament play which
will be Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6
p.m. and Sunday from 12:30 p.m.
to 6 p.m.
