President Carter Wednesday
night in New York. The
convention will be over today, so
many people will be able to go
back to their favorite TV
programs. Many have suggested
that one network be left open
each night for regular program
ming when the Republican and
Democratic national conventions
are being held.
The American Cancer Society
Tennis Tournament is Saturday
and Sunday at Red Fox Country
Club. It is open to all double
contestants. Call Randy Walker

Saturday at 7 p.m. is the Miss
Columbus and the Little Miss
Columbus Pageant at the Stearns
School Auditorium.
For those who missed “Bye,
Bye Birdie" or for those who

English Choir
In Concert Sunday
The 46 voice men and boys’
choir of St. James’ Church,
Leicester, England, will give a
concert in the Church of the Holy
Cross, Tryon, Sun., Aug. 17th at
Evensong beginning at 5:00 p.m.
The Choir, considered to be one
of England’s finest Parish
Choirs, is touring the Episcopal
Diocese of Western North
Carolina. They are spending one
month at the invitation of St.
James' Church, Hendersonville.
The Director of Music, Timothy
Lees, their Organist, Derek
Barnes, and the Vicar, the
Reverend Derek Hole will take
part in the concert and service.
The public is invited.
Tools Stolen
Wednesday a thief or thieves
entered the utility room of Hugh
Flynn's at Stott’s Corner, Rt. 1,
Landrum, and took tools estimat
ed at $250 value. The room was
unlocked and the thieves just
walked in and helped themselves.
Taken were assorted wrenches,
drills, all kinds of tools and a
tackle box. Polk County Deputies
Charles Smith ano Billy Stepp
are investigating the theft.
A GRADUATE
Michael Robert Arledge was
among the graduates Sunday at
Appalachian State University at
Boone. He majored in Business
Administration and is the son ot
Mr. and Mrs. Thurston Arledge of
Tryon.

Polk School Board
Has Busy Meeting
The Polk County School Board
met Tuesday night in the
Agriculture Extension Confer
ence Room in the Courtroom
annex.
The School Board hired the
following personnel: Rebecca
Johnson, Special Education at
Mill Spring; Margaret Craig,
Title I Reading; Arrovia Burton,
Elementary Music; Cheryl
Smith, Industrial Arts at Polk
County; Connie Walker, Special
Education Aide at Mill Spring.
Board voted to suspend the
Youth Opportunity Specialist
Program pending a program
evaluation by the Superinten
dent.
Board voted to allow the
Superintendent to hire clerical
assistants on an hourly basis at
the Supt.’s discretion. The Board
authorized the continued employ
ment for classified office person
nel for terms of Supt. Coble’s
contract or at his discretion.
The Board approved the
breakfast prices at 25c for
students and 35c for adults: the
elementary lunches for children
are 60c and for adults $1; Polk
Central lunches are 75c for
students and $1 for adults. (This
is the same schedule as last
year)
The Board directed Supt. Coble
to investigate the use of activity
buses by non-school groups.
The Board approved guidelines
for payment for supplements to

Girl Tennis Players
Report For Practice
The Tryon High School girls
varsity tennis team will meet
Monday at 8:30 a.m. at the tennis
courts at Harmon Field with
Doug Sterling. All girls intersted
in playing on the team should
come prepared to play.
Found Guilty
Of Murder
Carolyn Stanfield Gosnell, 27,
of Arcadia, S. C. was found guilty
Wednesday of second degree
murder at the court house in
Columbus. She was found guilty
in the death of James Delmar
Gosnell, 22, of Landrum. The
Gosnell man was found last Nov.
15th at the bottom of a well in the
Sigsbee area of Spartanburg
County. He had a shotgun wound
in his head.
Judge Robert E. Gaines was to
have passed sentance Thursday
morning, but phoned in that he
would be unable to be there until 2
p.m.
