Actor James Stewart. 72, was
reported resting comfortably at
St. John’s Hospital in Santa
Monica, Calif, after he was
admitted to the coronary care
unit because of an irregular
pulse.
In the past, people who wanted
to apply for food stamps could
only do so through food stamp or
welfare offices. Now the U. S.
Department of Agriculture and
the Social Security
Administration have made
arrangements that will enable
certain people to apply for food
stamps through Social Security
Offices. This service is intended
to make it easier for these people
to obtain food stamp assistance.
Craft demonstrations and Folk
entertainment are scheduled at
the Folk Art Center at Milepost
382 on the Blue Ridge Parkway
about '4 mile south of U. S. Hwy
70, just east of Asheville the week
of Aug. 25 — 31. The center is
open 9 a m to 5 p m everyday of
the year except Christmas and

Cancer Society
Tennis Results
Tim Corbett and David Vining,
both of Tryon, won the open event
of the American Cancer Society's
county-wide invitational men's
tennis tournament played on
August 16 and 17 at Red Fox
Country Club. Corbett and Vining
defeated Brewster Cornwell and
William Boyd, Greer, 6-3, 6-7, 6-1
in the finals, after having
previously defeated John
Dusenbury and Keith Grady in
the semi-finals. Cornwell and
Boyd had beaten Lee Haslam and
Digit Laughridge in the other
semi-final match.
In the seniors' event (teams
having an average age of 60 years
and over) Keith Grady and
William Child defeated George
Finnie and George Stothoff 3-6, 7-
6, 6-3 in the finals. Grady and
Child had previously defeated
Kevin Dunne and John Nash in
the semi-finals, and Finnie and
Stothoff had defeated Tener Weir
and Frank McFarland in the
other semi final match.
Proceeds from the tournament
were turned over by Randolph
Walker, tournament committee
chairman, to the Polk County
Unit of the American Cancer
Society, of which Mrs. John Nash
is Crusade Chairman. Other
tennis committee members
were: Mrs. Judson Graves, Mrs.
Randolph Walker, Sinkler
Manning. George Stothoff, and
Mark Boyles, tennis professional
at Red Fox
The Cancer Society is planning
a women’s benefit tennis
tournament in the fall
Autograph Party For
Dr. James Howard
Dr. James A. Howard will be
featured at an autograph party
on Tuesday. August 26th at 7:30
p m. by the Friends of the
Landrum Library. For this
special event, his new book
"Dark Corner Heritage" will be
on sale. The Friends of the
Library president, Floyd Daniel,
says Dr. Howard gives an
excellent account of what "Dark
Corner" was like a century ago
and brings you up-to-date on the
descendants of these people and
their contributions to the 20th
century.
Table Turned In
T.C.C. Championship
Fred Edwards. Sr , turned the
table on his son, Fred, Jr
(Freddie) in the Tryon Country
Club finals for the Club
Championship of 1980. Last year
Freddie finished his father off at
the 15th hole with a 2-under par
performance in the finals This
year, Fred, Sr. came up with an
identical 2-under par play
through the first 15 holes to win
the Championship Cup 4 and 3.
The Edwards family name
figures prominently on the
Country Club plaque listing
former champions Fred, Sr won
the Cup in 1951, 1952, 1953. 1976
and 1980 Freddie, a recent
member of the University of
Tennessee golf team, won the
local trophy in 1977 and 1979

Red Cross will launch its life,
saving fall program with a visit
to Tryon by the Bloodmobile on
Monday, August 25.
The Bloodmobile will be at the
Episcopal Church Parish Hall
from 12:30p.m. to5:30
Anyone 17 years old who
weighs more than 110 pounds
and is in good health can donate
blood, the Red Cross says 16
