Objects To Tax The Landrum City Council met Tuesday night at the City Hall. Jerry Covil, manager of Mid Carolina Telephone Co. which serves Landrum, spoke against the proposed 1% gross tax. He stated that it would cost the company 1'^96 to get the 1% and that this would all have to be passed on to the consumer. The Council passed the second reading of the measure but asked that Mr. Covil be present at a special meeting on Sept. 23rd with a counter proposal. The Council passed three readings on ordinances to refinance the Farmers Home Adminstration loan for water and sewer systems. First reading approval was given to refinancing £1,266,402.49 revenue bond; approved first reading on the rates and regulations and first reading on the city budget ordinance and tax levy ordinances. The total general fund budget will be $183,584 which will require a 75 mill tax. (same as last year . Tryon’s Coach Mike Pearson hopes the Tigers are ready for the Bears who already have one win under their belt. We belive the Tigers can pull it off. Polk Central at Landrum The Polk Central Patriots will be seeking their second win in a row against the Landrum Cardinals tonight at 8 o’clock at Landrum. After dropping their opening game to Mitchell, the Patriots upset Chesnee 14 to 13 last week. Landrum dropped its opening game to Chapman 28 to 0. Both teams have hard hitting defenses, but have had trouble moving the ball. Polk Central seems to have more of a threat in the air so we’ll pick the Patriots in a close one.
