Twelve cyclists from the
"Outward Bound" program were
passing through Polk County

Outerbanks.
More than 6,300 exotic birds,
from tiny finches to large parrots
and macaws worth up to $5,000
each, have been destroyed at an
import center at Miami, Fla.
because of an outbreak of
Newcastle disease, a virus that
kills domestic poultry. The birds
were killed to try to keep the
virus from spreading to domestic
poultry flocks.
A disc-shaped unidentified
flying object awakened some

The 4th U. S. Circuit Court of
Appeals in Richmond, Va. ruled
Thursday that the “Motorist’s
Prayer” that has appeared on the

Dr. Larry Coble
Is Kiwanis Speaker
The Tryon Kiwanis Club will
meet Tuesday at 12:45 p.m at the
Pacolet River Plantation. Dr.
Coble who is Superintendent of
the Polk County Public Schools
will talk on, "Public Opinion of
Education Today."
Dr. Coble. 32, is a native of
Guilford County. He completed
his undergraduate degree at
Campbell University and his
Masters and Doctorate Degrees
at the University of North
Carolina at Greensboro.
He has served in elementary
and seconday principalships in
both the Greensboro and High
Point Public Schools and as an
educational consultant with a
private firm. Before coming to
Polk County he was responsible
for working with the school
testing program on a statewide
basis with CTB-McGraw Hill
Dr. Coble is married to the
former Catherine Cheek, also of
Guilford County. They have one
child, to months old.

Paper Drive
The first of four waste paper
collections for the benefit of the
Tryon Tiger Band and Annual
Staff will take place Oct. 25, from
9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the old gym on
School St. This will be for papers
only, no magazines.
