Smith, son of Edwin J. Smith Sr. of P. 0. Box 332, Saluda, N. C., has returned from a deployment in the Mediterranean Sea. He is a crewmember aboard the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga, homeported in Mayport. Fla. During the cruise, the crew had the opportunity to visit the ports of Rota, Malaga and Palma de Mallorca. Spain; Naples, Italy and Tunis, Tunisia. The ship participated in several training exercises, including the NATO exercise “Dawn Patrol". "Dawn Patrol” tested the ship's ability to record ship movement and tracked the ship through a myriad of submarine, aircraft and surface ship threats. The Saratoga celebrated its 24th birthday during this cruise In October, the ship will commence a 28-month overhaul in Philadelphia. A 1973 graduate of Saluda High School, Smith joined the Navy in December 1977. Picture Taking Techniques It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words. If your photographs seems to fall short of that expectation then register for the Basic Picture Taking Techniques course being offered through Isothermal Community College by Robert Placak. The purpose of the course is to help people understand the basic techniques for getting quality photographs. The instructor will also explain how film and cameras work, discuss composition, taking photos by existing light, and techniques of photographing people; especially children. Mr. Placak has had 38 years of experience in the photo industry. He is currently a field representative for the Photo Marketing Association. In part, his responsibility include qualifying sales personnel and certifying photo finishers. The class will meet Tuesday night from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in Tryon starting November 4, 1980. The N. C. Senior Women’s Golf Championship was held at Pinehurst Country Club, Sept. 22- 24. 155 members competed in the 36-hole stroke play tournament. Tryon and Red Fox Country clubs were represented by 11 contestants: Eleanor Albertson, Emma Alderson, Jean Boutilier, Dot Cleveland, Betty Gibson, Dot Girardeau, Adie Kirby, Margaret Miller, Mable Pearson, Peg Placak.
