A number of his paintings depict places of interest in the Columbus and Tryon area, including several of Tryon s business district, Hogback Mountain, the Landrum Road and the old jail in Columbus The artist, a graduate of the College of Charleston, was a registered architect and civil engineer associated with J. E. Sirrine Company in Greenville, South Carolina, where he became a partner during the latter part of his life. Earlier in his life, he worked for the United States Geodetic Survey and was thoroughly familiar with the mountains of the Carolinas. He was married to the late Edna Broyles of Anderson, South Carolina where they both were reared. Originally, Spellman painted in the sytle of the English painter, Turner. Later, he studied with Elliott O’Hara at Flat Rock and was influenced by O’Hara s techniques and vivid color pallette. Spellman’s pencil and charcoal sketches reflect a spontaniety that is, perhaps, lacking in his watercolors. The collection contains all periods of his work. — Reporter ; 9000 HOLLAND GROWN BULBS Plant them now fora beautiful spring HYACINTH — TULIP — CROCUS NARCISSUS COWAN’S HARDWARE 230 N.
