Tonight the Columbus Town
Council meets at 7 p.m. at the
Town office; the Tryon Town
Council meets at 7:30 p.m. at the
Town Hall; the Tryon School
Board meets at 7:30 p.m. at the
high school and the Polk Central
School Board meets at 8 p.m. in
the Agriculture Meeting Room in
the courthouse annex.

More Fatalities
With Small Cars
The U. S. Department of
Transportation’s latest series of
new car crash tests has
reinforced predictions that the
growing number of small cars on
the nation’s highways will result
in sharp increases in fatalities
and serious injuries unless
significant improvements are
made in car safety.
In the safety tests the
American small cars come out
way ahead of the foreign models.

Children Invited
To Open House
The Tryon Fire Department
will have open house tonight for
children and their parents. There
will be a fireman on hand to
explain the equipment and the
operation of the fire department.
They will learn of the new radio
pager system for fire alarms
Children must have consent of
their parents to ride the fire truck
from 7 to 8 p.m. Chief Clarence
Scoggins said that everyone in
the community is invited to see
their fire department
Mrs. Jim Jackson and son,
David, of Aloha. Oregon were
recent guests of Mrs. Nelson
Jackson of Tryon.
In “Suor Angelica”
Ms. Judith Cloud will be
appearing in the Florida State
Opera Theater’s production of
"Suor Angelica” by Giacomo
Puccini, Nov. 14, 15 and 16 in
Tallahassee, Fla. Ms. Cloud,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Russell
Cloud, of Tryon, received her
Master of Music degree in June
(1980) and is now working on her
doctorate at F.S.U. She is one of
seven students who have been
awarded assistantships to
perform new music written by
faculty and student composers in
residence.
