Our congratulations to the
Town of Columbus on its 125th
birthday. In a way it is hard to
believe that we are still that
young. Big plans are in the
making for tomorrow. The
Parade will be held at 10 a.m.; at
11 a.m. Cong. Lamar Gudger will
be at the flag raising ceremonies
at Stearns School, the afternoon
will find all kinds of
entertainment. At 7 p.m. there
will be a street dance featuring
the Barry Jackson band.
Louis Samia, 56, of Katonah, N.
Y., the former head of CARE was
arrested Wednesday and charged
with stealing $105,000 from the
private international aid and
development agency, which
distributes food and clothing
around the world.
The Polk Central Homecoming
Parade is today at 3 pm in
Columbus. Tonight is
homecoming for both Landrum
and Polk Centra) with the Queens
being crowned.
The Democratic Fund Raising
Dinner is Saturday at 6:30 p.m at
the Polk Central High School

Man Murdered;
Two Females
Arrested
Bill Burnett, 44, of Rt. 1, Mill
Spring (Rock Springs section)
was found dead Wednesday at
12:30 p m. in Holbert's Cove.
Sheriff Boyce Carswell said that
he died from a bullet which went
in the back of his head. Sheriff
Carswell said that two white
females had been arrested and
were in the Polk County jail.
Colleen Story Wright, 19, of
Rutherfordton has been charged
with First Degree Murder and a
15-year-old juvenile girl is
awaiting a hearing.
Mr. Burnett was found by Buck
Ford and Spud Ravan, who along
with other members of the Polk
County Rescue Squad and the
Shriff’s Dept, had been searching
for Mr. Burnett for two days
They found his body on an old
logging road lying in a small
spring drain.
Mr. Burnett had been missing
since noon Monday. His wrecked
truck was found Tuesday
morning near the Silver Creek
Church on the Lake Adger Road
Found near the wrecked truck
was his billfold with $394 and a 32
calibre pistol with one spent
cartridge in it.

Tryon at Chesnee
The Tryon Tigers will travel to
Chesnee tonight for a game with
the Eagles. This should be a close
game, but with all the injuries the
Tigers have had they will do well
just to stay close Kickoff is at 8
p.m.
Tryon Chamber
Meets Monday
The Tryon Chamber of
Commerce will meet Monday at
7:30 p.m. at the Tryon Town Hall.
All members and interested
citizens are invited. The election
of Board Members will be held.
Woman Sentenced
In Husband’s Death
Evelyn Clark Sain, 37-ydar-old
Tryon woman was given an
active prison term Wednesday in
Polk County Superior Court after
a jury found her guilty Tuesday
in the June 8th shooting of her
husband, Horace Edward "Doc"
Sain,36.
The state had prosecuted Mrs.
Sain for first-degree murder in
the death of Sain who had been
shot down with a .22 caliber pistol
in front of a number of witnesses
at Doc’s Lounge on Trade Street
in Tryon which he owned and
operated.
