The leaves are beginning to show their fall color, but a lot of them are still green. The Tryon Volunteer Fire Department was called to Lake Lanier Monday about 1:15 p.m. A fire was reported, but it turned out to be some brush being burned at the site of Danny Owens’ new home. Ernest Burwell of Tryon died Tuesday at 2 a m at St. Luke's Hospital. There were no details available at press time. Iraq claimed troops and tanks forged an "air-tight" ring around the embattled Iranian oil cities of Abadan and Khorramshahr Monday. St. John's Annual Fall Bazaar is Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at 8;15 p.m. the Spartanburg Palmetto Statesmen Chorus will be at the Fine Arts Center. Annual Meeting For Roseland Roseland Community Center will have its annual board meeting Thursday, Oct 23 at 8 p.m. The public is invited. Refreshments will be served following the meeting Bloodmobile Successful 145 New Donors) The Polk County Chapter of American Red Cross conducted a very successful bloodmobile Monday at the Parish House 169 people came to donate and 153 pints were collected 45 of these were first time donors. Tryon High School students donated 6 pints while the faculty donated 3 pints. Polk Central students donated 16 pints and the faculty and staff members donated 8 pints. Much credit can be given to the efforts of the newly organized Volunteer Citizens Blood Recruitment Committee. Two Killed In Auto Wreck Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Turner of Tryon were killed in an automobile accident early Tuesday morning on Blackstock Road near Bird Mountain The vehicle hit a tree and was cut into. According to reports, the back end of the car passed the front end of the car after the impact. No details of the wreck were available. Feagan Catherine W. Feagan, (Mrs. Charlie) of Columbus has been selected as the 1981 Polk County Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Feagan, has had 30 yetfrs of experience and teaches the fifth Grade at Stearns School. Saluda, Stearns, Mill Spring, Green Creek and Polk Central faculties nominated a member of each faculty to be considered for the honor Other nominees were Larry Warren of Saluda, Geraldine Coley of Mill Spring; Edna D. Wondra have bought the Danny Owens’ home on Dogwood Trail, Tryon. They formerly lived in Downers Grove, Ill. Mr. Wondra (Ray) has retired from Western Electric and Mrs. Wondra (May) was a former school teacher, receiving her Bachelor’s Degree from St. Mary's College, Notre Dame, Indiana. Mr. Wondra's mother, Lillian, has moved to Tryon with them and is an active 99 year old quiltmaker. The Wondra’s enjoy golf and bridge and Mrs. Wondra also weaves as a hobby.
