DID YOU KNOW THAT.... }
Your County Commission Chairman, OPAL SAUVE, went to bat
for Polk County citizens with both District and State Department of
Transportation personnel and with Governor James Hunt?
In the spring of 1979, she organized a petition drive, asking for
the repaving and widening of N. C. Highway 9 in Polk County. On
June 21, 1979, in Franklin, N. C. she presented that petition to N. C.
Secretary of Transportation Thomas Bradshaw, along with a plea
on behalf of 730 citizens who signed the petition and described the
dangerous conditions that existed here.
Her efforts didn't stop there, however. Additional names were
obtained and the petition with 774 names was then sent to
Governor Hunt. A reply was received on September 23, 1979.
In August of that year, Opal went to Raleigh and again asked
Secretary of Transportation Bradshaw to help with repaving N. C.
9. Correspondence and phone calls continued and on April 30,
1980, she traveled to Buncombe Tech. College in Asheville to
appear again before Secretary Bradshaw, who along with Mr. Jack
Bryant, Mr. Jim Parham and other transportation officials, agreed
that Highway 9 would receive attention soon.
Work began on the highway shortly after and today the road has
been widened and paved from Beulah to Mill Spring.
No, Opal Sauve is not afraid to stand up for Polk County
citizens. She has proven her dedication to you. Now she needs
your vote on November 4.
