Hospital Auxiliary Elects Officers The annual luncheon meeting of the St Luke’s Hospital Auxiliary members was held at the Railroad House on October 8th. The Treasure’s report was presented by Mrs. Tucker who slated almost $40,000 of the Auxiliary earnings was directed to the hospital this year The Auxiliary has three means of earning money: 1. the Thrift Shop on Trade Street in Tryon; 2. Income from dues and memorial fund contributions; and 3. the gift Shop in the hospital lobby. 0. O. PaulseU. chairman of the St. Lukes Board of Trustees, thanked the members for all they have contributed in money, time and effort, and stressed the important contributions thus made in reducing costs to the hospital Mr. Paulsell presented a handsome bronze plaque with the seal of St. Luke's Hospital mounted on marble to Mrs Thomas Beaver from Hospital in recognition of valuable contributions she made as president of Auxiliary. ’ Futures Unlimited’' was the the the the topic of Miss Blomfield-Brown’s speech in which she compared the early days of St Luke's Hospital and Auxiliary with changes inauguarated in the last few years. She praised the Auxiliary for having always grown as the needs of the hospital have grown. The most important milestones in the history of the Auxiliary, according to the speaker were: 1 when the Exchange Shop moved from its free quarters on property on which now stands the North Carolina National Bank, to the present site on Trade Street, and began to drastically increase profits; 2. the doubling of volunteers with the move to the new hospital; and 3. the installation of a Director of Volunteer Services, an innovation for a small, rural hospital. The many problems for both patients and hospitals in meeting the exceedingly high costs of health care today were also explained, and the necessity for every hospital department to emphasize the need for curtailing all unnecessary expenses. The speaker applauded the Auxiliary’s efforts both in raising funds and in helping in so many ways to make a patient’s hospital stay as pleasant and comfortable as possible. How important the work of the Auxiliary is to the hospital and the community was also emphasized by the fact that it s financial contributions are now included as a integral part of the hospital’s capital budget, relied upon for essential items needed by hospital and staff Miss Blomfield-Brown stressed how very important the work of the volunteers is in helping maintain continued exemplary- standards. investigating, foreseeing, and helping in any and all community health needs' encouraging public support, establishing rapport with the community, interpreting hospital needs and services, and promoting awareness of the fact that St. Luke’s can provide, locally and very adequately, almost all needed health services.
