Every now and then someone asks us why we comment on the weather since we are all here and know what the weather is like. Many people who are considering retiring to this area (along with other areas), subscribe to the paper to find out how the weather is — hot hot it gets? How cold? How wet? Sometimes our weather isn't so good, but for year around living, we just don't think it can be beat if you like four seasons. David H. Barnett pleaded guilty Wednesday to spying for the Soviet Union and the government described how the debt-ridden former CIA agent cooly peddled his nation's secrets to KBG agents on three continents for $92,000 Many of the nation's big banks raised their prime lending rate to 14.5 percent Wednesday. C. 28782 Communication To: Citizens of Polk County Recently I was contacted by the Managing Editor of the Thermal Belt News Journal He asked me if our Wheaton Plant was going to close down operations in Polk County. I told him NO! and I explained that we were very busy and working three shifts. We continued our conversation and he then asked me if I got along with the Polk County Commissioners or if I had ever had any trouble with them. I told him I had not had any trouble with them; in fact, I didn't even know them. I also told him I did not know the Democratic Candidates for Commissioner. From this short conversation and limited information, Thomas Haywood put together the unbelievable editorial concerning the Wheaton Plant. I did not know this was planned and I do not appreciate being pulled into a political controversy. I was not here during the time of the construction of the plant, but I understand that Wheaton Industries Management was very concerned that the decision to locate here might have been a mistake I want to ask the help of the local citizens in keeping us at Wheaton isolated from the political controversy I am sorry that this situation occured and I shall make every effort to avoid any future entanglements. Respectfully, William Benson. Plant Manager Price 10c Per Cop; Tonight FRIDAY, OCT. 31,1980 Football All three area schools will play away from home tonight. Tryon travels to Lockhart, Polk Central goes to Rosman and Landrum goes to Due West. Tryon at Lockhart The Tryon Tigers are still looking for their first win of the year and have a chance tonight. It should be a close game, but we’ll have to go with the home team, Lockhart. Kickoff is at 8 p.m. Polk Central at Rosman There is not love lost in this game. Both teams are capable of playing good ball. Rosman upset NCSD last week, but somehow we believe the Patriots will win. Kickoff is at 7:30.
