The majority of the American
people have spoken and want a
change in the national
leadership. The last we heard the
U. S. Senate would have a
Republican majority and the U.
S. House would still be controlled
by the Democrats, but by a
smaller margin. The big upset in
North Carolina was the victory of
John East over Sen. Robert
Morgan.
We congratulate the winners.
The majority of the voters has
elected you. It is now time to
close ranks and work for a better
America

Man Arrested
For Robbing
Amoco Station
Fast work by local law
enforcement officers brought the
quick arrest of Terry Means of
Spartanburg, S. C Tuesday night
on the Tryon Country Club Road
A man robbed the Columbus
Quick Amoco Service Station at
Hwy. 108 and 1-26 at 6:52 p.m of
approximately $838 from clerk
Melanie Butler.
Polk County Deputy Michael
Dukes had pulled into the
Columbus Gulf Station as he had
reports of a blue pick up truck
which had been acting
suspiciously in the area. The
station attendent Mark West told
him a truck with that description
was parked at the Columbus
Quick Amoco and about that time
the truck pulled out Deputy
Dukes pulled out and started to
follow him. About that time he
passed the Amoco Station word
came over the radio that the
station had been robbed Deputy
Dukes caught up with the truck
on Harmon Field Road and
notified the Tryon Police The
truck went on to Hwy. 176 and
then turned back toward Tryon
Deputy Dukes said that the truck
turned up Tryon Country Club
Road and when he saw the blue
lights of the Tryon Police Car. he
put his blue light on and stopped
the truck The pick-up stopped
but instead of the driver getting
out, he slamed the truck into
reverse, hit Deputy Duke’s car,
and took off toward the Tryon

Patriot Band
Turns Down
Peach Bowl
Polk Central Patriot Band
recently received an invitation to
participate in the Peach Bowl
Festival in Atlanta, Georgia on
January 2, 1981 This honor came
as a result of the Patriot Band's
winning performance at the
international music festival in
Toronto, Canada in May of this
year The band has been planning
for several months to participate
and represent Polk County and
North Carolina in the nationally
televised Peach Bowl festival in
Atlanta.
Last week Patriot band
director, David Senn was
informed by the Peach bowl
committee that the band
members could not attend the
Peach bowl game unless they
bought tickets at $14.00 each He
was further informed by the
committee that game tickets
could not be guaranteed for the
students to buy Mr Senn feels
the actions of the committee have
been most unprofessional and the
conditions of the invitation
unacceptable. He states. "I
regret the time, effort and
expense invested by the band
members to make such a trip is
not appreciated by the Peach
Bowl officials. They seek to take
unfair advantage of our students
by asking them to come and
entertain their crowd and then
rewarding their sacrifice by
requiring them to pay to see the
game when tickets for the game

Ronald Reagan
Sweeps Nation
Ronald Reagan won the White
House Tuesday night, sweeping
past President Carter. In an
election that pollsters said was
too close to call, apparently all
the undecided voters went for
Reagan. Not only did he win in a
big fashion but his coattails were
big enough to bring in a lot of
Republican Senators, House
Members and Governors.
Gov Jim Hunt bucked the tide
and won his re-election bid in
North Carolina, but John East
apparently upset Senator
Robert Morgan in the U S
