Garden Clinic N. C. State University Answers Timely Gardening Questions Q I have sown a cover crop of rye in my vegetable garden. What should I do in the spring in order to prepare the area for planting? ( (T. B, Salisbury) A. Plow the rye under in late March or early April to allow it to decay. Fertilize at planting time according to soil test recommendations. (Larry Bass, extension horticultural specialist) Q When is the proper time to prune blueberry bushes? (K. G., Wilson) A. Newly set plants should be cut back sufficiently to remove all fruit buds. Continue to remove all fruit buds each year until the third year after planting to establish a large bearing area in the shortest possible time Prune mature — bearing — bushes during the dormant season, preferably during January or February. Remove low spreading branches and the weakest canes Leave the more upright canes but "tip" them back to five or six fruit buds (Barclay Poling, extension horticultural specialist) Q. I have an old overgrown apple tree with many suckers and dead branches. I hate to cut it down because it shades one side of the house in summer What can I do to rejunenate it? (S. B., Durham) A. Remove all the dead wood Lower the tree if it is higher than you wish by cutting it back to a good lateral branch. Cut out side branches that are rubbing, crossing and interfering with good branches. Once pruned like this, your tree will send out many suckers. Remove these when they get about a foot long if they are not in a desired place. You've got about a three-year job getting your apple tree back to a good, normal shape Most times it's easier to cut it completely and plant a new tree (Mel Kolbe. the former Miss North Carolnia, and Jim "Catfish" Hunter, retired professional baseball player, were special guests at the meeting also. Mark Hicklin of Tryon, North Carolina has been named a diplomate of the American Board of Family Practice (ABFP) as a result of passing a certification examination offered by the ABFP He is now certified in the medical specialty of family practice. The intensive 2-day written examination is designed to prove the candidate's ability in the areas of internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics, gynecology, pediatrics, psychiatry and community medicine. To qualify for the examination a physician must have successfully completed three years of residency training in family practice.
