FFA Advisor Richard Smith, Stuart Walker. Kevin Russell, and Kenneth Hyder. Polk Central's Land Judging Team, under the leadership of Richard Smith, was the first place winner in this year’s Mountain View FFA Federation Land Judging Contest held on November 13. The contest was held on Baxter Doggett's farm just south of Forest City. Chase High School placed second. East High School was third, R-S Central High School was fourth, and McDowell County placed fifth. By winning, the Polk Central team becomes eligible to attend the State Land Judging Contest next April. Polk Central's Stuart Walker had the highest individual score in the contest. The Rutherford Soil and Water Conservation District sponsored this year's contest. Next year's contest will be held in Polk County and sponsored by the Polk Soil and Water Conservation District. In the contest, contestants determine the physical characteristics of the surface and subsurface layers of four (4) soils. Factors such as structure, texture, consistence, permeability, drainage, and slope are used to determine the type of conservation treatments needed to minimize erosion and maximize soil productivity. Each soil is also judged on its limitations for urban uses such as foundations and landscaping. Land Judging is important because it teaches our young people how to recognize the capabilities and limitations of the land It gives them a better respect for the many differences in our soils. Richard Smith. FFA Advisor at Polk Central, is to be commended for the fine job he has done with the Polk Central team in recent years. This year marks the 8th time in the last 9 years that the Polk Central Team lias won this contest. — Levourn Wiggins, District Conservationist Real Estate Look What I Have Done!
