Garden Clinic N C. State Answers Timely Gardening Questions Q. My neighbor spreads old newspapers across his backyard garden plot. His intentions are to kill growth in the garden while he waits for leaves to fall. Then he will cover the papers with leaves — grass clippings — and, later plow the whole thing under. Is it a good idea to use old newspapers in your garden? (D. R , Charlotte) A. Yes, with one exception Newspaper mulch used in the spring when the soil is still cold will delay the maturity of tomatoes, peppers, squash and other warm season vegetables. For this reason, it is best to wait until the soil has warmed up to put down newspapers. Also make sure the soil is moist when you put down the papers. The effect of newspapers is not as great on cool season vegetables such as lettuce, broccoli and cabbage. One advantage of paper mulch is that it will decay by the end of the growing season.
