cold, but warmed up as the day
progressed.
The Senate gave final approval
Wednesday to an amendment
that would prohibit the
government from asking courts
to bus children out of their own
neighborhoods to desegregate
public schools and was sent to
President Carter on a voice vote.
The president has been urged by
his attorney general to veto the
bill. The amendment is tacked on
to an appropriations bill.
Six companies pleaded guilty
Wednesday in federal court to
bid-rigging charges involving
North Carolina road paving
contracts and were ordered to
pay more than $1.5 million in
fines. Officers of several of the
companies also were sentenced
to active prison terms.
A federal jury in New York
found lame-duck Reps. Frank
Thompson, Jr. D-N. J. and John
M. Murphy, D.-N. Y., guilty last
Wednesday of numerous charges
in the FBI's undercover Abscam
case Both were found guilty of
conspiring to defraud the U. S.
government by agreeing to
accept bribes in return for
promising to help fictitiuous Arab

Asheville School
The Tryon High School Tigers
won a doubleheader from
Asheville School Wednesday at
Asheville. The Tryon girls opened
their season with a 51-42 win and
the boys took an 82-73 victory.
Tracy Simpson and Brenda
Keys each had 15 points for the
Tryon girls, but the high scorer
for the game was Asheville
School’s 6’1" Jan Merryweather
who had 32 points.
Leading the Tryon boys to their
opening win were Sam Miller
with 30 points, Lindsey Miller 17
and Tony Cunningham 12 points
The Asheville Blues were led by
Chappel Carter with 20 points and
Dennis Thorpe with 19 points.
The Tryon J V boys won 56-30

Columbus. Mr. Smith is a
graduate of Tryon High School

Mrs. Smith is the former Annette
Fenton of Elberon, N. J. They
have two sons, Stephen Emil, age
2, and Lewis Merrit, 3 months.
Mr. Smith enjoys music and

One Book
Of The Bible
Approximately once each
month, the Vicar of Good
Shepherd Episcopal Church,
Rev. Ralph Bonacker, will use
the sermon time to discuss one
book of the Bible. The purpose of
this series is to help everyone to
know and understand Holy Scrip
ture—and to read it with greater
comprehension.-
This Sunday at 9:30 a m., will
be the first “Book-of-the-Month
Sunday” at Good Shepherd, with
Matthew, the first of the Gospels
in the New Testament under
consideration. Emphasis will be
placed on the unique qualities of
this Gospel, its purposes and its
message.
Good Shepherd has also made
its plans for a Christmas Service
of Holy Communion at 10 p.m on
Christmas Eve. All are welcome.

Roger Hathaway of the NASA
Community Involvement
Program will be the featured
speaker at the 9:30 Assembly at
Tryon High School, Friday,
December 5.
The National Aeronautic and
Space Administration (NASA) is
currently presenting their
Community Involvement
Programs in the area schools and
civic groups. The purpose of the
program is to interpert the
works and findings of NASA.
Exhibits of Lunar samples and
enlarged photos from the latest
Voyager I and II Space Missions
will be on display.
Hathaway is a Research
Associate from Virginia
Polytechnic Institute and State
University in Blackburg
Virginia. He is presently
assigned to NASA Langley
Research Center’s Office of
Education and Community
