Manager of the U. S. Savings
Bonds Division of the Treasury
Department was in Tryon
Tuesday morning to present a
plaque to John G. Landrum. Jr.
"For Patriotic Service U. S.
Savings Bonds Program”. J. G.
Landrum, Jr., Polk County
Chairman 1948-1979. Mr. Rogers
said that Mr. Landrum had
served as a volunteer chairman
for the Polk County program for
31 years. Actually Mr. Landrum
has been issuing Savings Bonds
longer than that. He issued the
first Savings Bond in Polk County
in May 1941. This is another one
of the many volunteer activities
Mr Landrum has been involved
in over the years.
Former Beatle John Lennon
was shot to death late Monday
outside his apartment building on
Manhattan’s Upper Side. Lennon,
40, was rushed to Roosevelt
Hospital where he was

Town News
The Tryon Town Council met
Monday night at the Town Hall.
Earl Porter of Wilcox Road
complained of loud noise and
music at Buffie’s Restaurant and
asked the Town’s assistance in
helping out with the problem.
The Board approved a budget
ordinance for 1980-81 HUD
Community Development
Project to the Town in the total
amount of $500,000
The Board approved requests
for water adjustments due to
broken lines from Mrs. Ellen
Lovdall. Miller Road; Wayne
Johnson, Carson Street.
The Board adjourned to
executive session for discussion
of personnel and land acquisition.
The Board re-appointed Charles
C. Stratford to a 3-year term to
the Town ABC Board and re-
appointed C. Allan Pruette to a 3-
year term to the Town Planning
and Zoning Board. The Board
took no action on the land
acquisition.
Sunny View Ruritan
Officers Installed
The Sunny View Ruritan Club
held their annual installation of
officers Tuesday, Dec 2nd at the
Stage Coach Inn at Lake Lure.
The new officers are: Robert
Bates, President; Bobby L.
Moore, Vice Pres.; Leon
Burgess, Sec.; Glenn Burgess.
Tres.; Board of Directors. Fred

Elected Chairman
The Polk County School Board
met Monday night in the
courthouse annex and Willie
Arledge was elected chairman.
The Board accepted the Budget
Resolution and Budget Report to
be sent to the State Board for the
1980-81 school year.
Arthur Covil, maintenance
supervisor gave an update on the
classroom situation at Polk
Central and reported that the new
section is nearing completion. He
also discussed the re-roofing of
the Green Creek gym which the
Board has approved.
Mrs. Susan Dobbins, Special
Education Coordinator presented
plans for utilizing the additional
$8,000 received recently from the
State Board The money will be
used in Special Education
Program for Gifted and Talented
Students to hire a teacher
beginning in mid-January for 4th,
Sth. and Sth grades
Alan Peoples, principal at Mill
Spring School reported that work
on Hwy. 108 had begun and
mentioned that a temporary
fence and entrance near the fire
department is being set up for a
safety measure due to the re
routed traffic
Mrs Phyllis Crain made a
motion which carried that the
Superintendent extend an
invitation to the Polk Central
Students Committe to appear
before the board each meeting if
the students so desire

Patriot Band
In Play-A-Thon
Polk Central Patriot Band will
have a twenty-four hour play-a-
thon at Stearns School beginning
Friday December 12 at 4:00 p.m.
and ending Saturday, December
13 at 4:00 p.m. This is the first
twenty-four hour play-a-thon for
the Patriots and might be a first
for a high school band in North
Carolina. If anyone wishes to
sponsor a player, contact David
Senn, Patriot Band Director.
