The weather cleared up in
time lor the Tryon Christmas
Parade. This is an annual project
of the Tryon Fire Department.
They organize the parade and
then have Santa distribute bags
of fruit to the children at the rear
of the Town Hall. This year the
Firemen are about $500 shy of
meeting their expenses. Those
who would like to help them may
leave a contribution at the Town
Hall, the Tryon Daily Bulletin or
give to any fireman.
The Christmas trees and lights
on Trade and Pacolet streets are
also supported by people and
businesses wishing everyone a
Merry Christmas. The trees were
donated by Mrs. P. C. Cochran,
cut down by Troop 150 Boy
Scouts, the Town of Tryon crews
put them up, 15 members of the
Rotary Club placed the lights on
the trees and Duke Power hooked
them up. K. C Smart is chairman
of the Tryon Chamber of
Commerce committee which
oversees the project each year.
On Sunday. Dec. 14, visitors to
the N. C. Museum of Art will have
the opportunity to view
contemporary works by fellow
Pellatt Wins
“Voice of
Democracy”
Mark Pellat, a 10th grade
student at Tryon High School won
the Community '‘Voice of
Democracy" contest sponsored
by Polk County Memorial Post
9116 and the Ladies auxiliary of
the VFW with the cooperation of
the national association of
broadcasters and the state
association of broadcasters. This
was the 34th annual Voice of
Democracy National braodcast
scriptwriting scholarship
program. The theme this year
was “My Commitment to my
Country."
There were seven finalists in
the County, Mark Pellatt. Kim
Burrell, and Karen Rindge from
Tryon High and Sherry Horne,
Randy McDaniel, Paula Scruggs
and Gerald Petty from Polk
Central High. Jonathan Logan of
Polk Central was last year's
winner.
This year’s winner will receive
a cash award of $25 00 His entry
is placed in the district contest,
which will be judged this week
The district winner will enter the
state contest and the winner will
enter the national contest. Each
state winner is provided with a
five day all expense paid trip to
Washington. D. C. plus the
opportunity to compete for
national scholarships totaling
$31,500, first place, $14,000 ; 2nd
place, $7,000 ; 3rd place. $4,500;
4th place. $3,500; Sth place $2,500
Christmas Sales
At Tryon Crafts
One-of-a-kind Christmas
presents, handicrafted by Tryon
artists, will be on display and sale
at the Tryon Craft's Shop on the
lower level of The Tryon Fine
Arts Center from 9:00 to 4:00
starting this Friday and
continuing until Christmas eve.
According to an ad a wide
variety of articles for Christmas
gifts and stocking-stuffers will be
on sale, all made by students and
teachers at the Craft's classes. A
large Christmas tree will display
unusual ornaments and
trimmings also for sale
The sale will include silver
necklaces, bracelets, rings, tree
ornaments, gem-studded
pendants and bolos. enameled
pendants, dishes, switch-plates
and cloisonne; needlework,
woodcarvings and Christmas
ornaments; and a variety of such
unique articles as gem trees and
luggage and car locators.

PTA Tonight
The Green Creek PTA will
meet tonight at 7 o'clock at the
school. The 4th. Sth and 6th
grades will present a Christmas
Cantata.
Fires
The Landrum Volunteer Fire
Department was called to a grass
and woods fire Saturday
afternoon on Blackstock Road in
the Fairview Church area.
Sunday night they were called
to the City Compound where
there was a grass fire.
