Rev. and Mrs. Joe Wagner
have moved from Moore, S. C. to
Emporia. Va. where he is
minister at the First Church
P.C.U.S. and of the Aberdour
Church PCUS in Jarret. Mr.
Wagner is a former pastor of the
Tryon Presbyterian Church.
Rep. John Jenrette announced
Wednesday that he is resigning
from the House to halt explusion
preceedings against him
resulting from his conviction for
bribery and conspiracy in the
abscam investigation.
Mrs. Eleanor Todd Yarbrough
who is now at Marjorie McCune
Memorial Center at Black
Mountain would like to wish all of

County Manager
Is Named
The Polk County
Commissioners in a special
meeting last Friday afternoon
named Steve Wilson, 35, of
Columbus as county manager.
The office had been vacant since
Marvin Wagner resigned to
accept the position of principal at
Green Creek School.
Mr. Wilson, a graduate of Polk
Central High School, is the son of
Mr. and Mrs Charlie Wilson of
the Peniel Community. He is
married to the former Margaret
Ford and they have one son,
Chris, age 8. They make their
home in the Peniel Community
where they attend the Peniel
Baptist Church.
Mr. Wilson received an A.A.
degree in Business
Administration from Isothermal
Community College, an A.A.
degree in Industrial Management
from Spartanburg Technical
College and a B.S. degree in
Management Science from
Limestone College. Following
High School he served four years
in the U. S. Air Force. He has
been with International Wire
Company in Inman for the past
8'2 years.
He will become County
Manager as soon as he works out
his notice with International Wire
Comany. He will receive a salary
of $15,000 annually which will be
increased to $17,500 after a period
of six months.
Star Party
On Monday
Monday at 7 p.m. a Star Party
will be held at 0. P. Earle
Elementary School in Landrum
for local amateur astronomers.
Telescopes will be set up in front
of the school. The main target
will be the moon. The public is
invited and the astronomers will
answer questions relating to
astronomy.
Rescue Squad
Is Honored
The Polk County Rescue Squad
and Auxiliary were honored
recently at Caro-Mi by Mr. and
Mrs. Carl Tomko.
Shank Hipp was named
Squadman of the Year" and the
Auxiliary named Mrs. Linda
Tucker as the "Outstanding
Member."
A special plaque was presented
to Henry Gilbert, a charter
member of the squad and its
oldest active member.
The Auxiliary presented the
Rescue Squad with $1,300 from
funds raised during the year,
primarily from ice cream sales.
Singing Sunday
The Community Mass Choir of
Green Creek, along with the
combined choirs of The Church of
Living God and The New
Testament Church, will give a
musical program Sunday at 6

Church. The public is invited.
Patriot Band
To Establish
Guiness Book Record
The Polk Central Band will
begin a twenty-four play-a-thon
today at 4 p.m. which will end on
Sat., Dec. 13 at 4 p.m. at Stearns
School They'll be trying to
establish a Guiness World Book
record by playing a pre-planned
number of musical selections
within a 24 hour period. At
present no record exists and
whatever number they play will
go down as a record in the
Guiness World Book of Records if
accepted.
Everyone is invited to come
listen and to sponsor a band
student for a minimum of tweniv
cents per hour. You may contact
David Senn, the Patriot Bani
Director or any band student
Funds from this event will K
used to help finance the
