He is a graduate of Tryon High School, Warren-Wilson College, and is the son of Mr. and Mrs' Elwood Martin. He has had some experiences that most of us will never get. He was even in an ox cart wreck. (We haven’t even seen a team of oxen in years.) Landrum Chess Tournament Results The First Annual Chess Tournament conducted by the Spartanburg City County Parks and Recreation Dept, and the District One Schools was held Saturday, December 6, at the O. P. Earle School. Twenty-eight players turned out to compete in four different divisions in the tournament which was directed by Mike Williams of Tryon. In the adult division, Norman Hazle, a retired serviceman of Landrum won with a perfect 3-0 score. Ernest De Guzman, won the high school division, Ernest a 12 year old from Spartanburg, won with a 3-0 score. Three students tied for second with 2 wins and 1 lose. These were Pat Wood from East Flat Rock and Kim Wilson and John Anthony of Landrum Joel De Guzman, 10 years old, who is one of the top 50 players in the United States, won the Sth and 6th grade division. Steve Wilson of Landrum finished second, and his younger sister Meredith, finished 3rd. The fourth grade and under division was won by 6 year old Ginger Hamrick, with four wins and one draw. The 1st. grader has played with the Landrum Chess Club since kindergarden Finishing second in this division was Bob Briggs of Landrum with 4 wins and 1 loss Mrs. Mary Pilgrim Services for Mary Wilkins Pilgrim, wife of Houston Pilgrim. Jr. of Landrum will be held today (Wed.)at3;30p m at star Bethel Holiness Church with the Rev. A. Jones officiating. Burial will Mill Chapel Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m. Mrs. Pilgrim died Sunday. Cannon and Sons Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Sunny View News By Mrs. Greek Underwood A family Christmas dinner was held Sun., Dec. 14th at the home of Miss Bonnie Blanton. There were 38 relatives and friends present. Mrs. James Gibson has returned from Pardee Hospital after undergoing surgery. Mrs John Youngblood of F orest City was a recent guest of Mrs. Greek Underwood. Mrs. Etta Ruff has returned from St. Luke's Hospital and is recuperating at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Bill Dyer. Bill Jackson is ill at his home. Recent guests of Mrs. Alice Skipper were Mrs. Mary Alice Wilson, Rhonda and Virgil of Saluda; Mrs. Sue Williams, David and Sue; Rev. and Mrs. George Lynch, Mr. and Mrs. General View. Hayens, all of Sunny Mrs. Gillette guests Kasden (Peggy) of West Hartford, Cnnn.; Mrs. George Spencer (Linda) and Graham of Margaret Rawlins of Woods, Tryon has as Mr. and Mrs. Larry Ft Riley, Kansas; Mr. and Mrs. James Holland (Mary) and Laura, of Indianapolis, Indiana. “Why The Chimes Rang” A Christmas Pageant, “Why the Chimes Rang," will be presented by the children of the Cngregational Church on Sunday at 5 p m. in the sanctuary. Dan Trumble, assisted by Clara Rogers, will direct the performance. Playing Tonight The Music Makers are playing tonight at the Hendersonville Country Club for their Christmas dinner and dance. Charity Bridge Results Given The results of the Charity Bridge game held Thursday at St. John's Catholic Church in which 44 players participated were as follows: North-South: 1st. Mrs. Robert Ernst and Mrs. John Albertson, 2nd. Dr. Lionel Davis and Fred Chevalier, 3rd. Mr and Mrs. Arthur Pomeroy. East-West: 1st. Mr. and Mrs. Howard C. Olson, 2nd. Arthur Farwell and George Kelly, 3rd. Mrs. David Q. Porter and Mrs. Charles Dodd. There will be no game until January 8th.
