Registered Land Surveyor, was
awarded the Suveyor of the Year
Award by Ihe Western Chapter of
the North Carolina Society of
Surveyors in Asheville on Dec
9th.
Mr Marlowe and his family
moved from Greensboro in May
1972 to open his surveying
business in Columbus
He serves as Director of the
Ethics and Illegal Practices
Committee of the North Carolina
Sociely of Surveyors He is
registered in South Carolina and
an active member of the South
Carolina Society of Surveyors
and the American Congress on
Surveying and Mapping. Mr.
Marlowe is a Rotarian and a
member of Peniel Baptist
Church
Ken Tucker Is
Rotary Speaker
The Tryon Rotary Club will
meet Friday at 12:30 p.m at the
Pacolet River Plantation. Tryon
Mayor Ken Tucker will show
slides and tell of his recent trip to
Korea as a member of the Rotary
International District 767 Group
Study Exchange team Mayor
Tucker is the Consumer Credit
Officer at NCNB.
Mrs. Sue Alewine has returned
to her home in Tryon after being
a patient at Spartanburg General
Hospital.

Wednesday was sunny and
warmer. It has been perfect
weather, maybe too good because
we need a good rain to keep down
woods and grass fires.
President-elect Ronald Reagan
has selected Gen. Alexander M.
Haig as secretary of Slate and
Raymond Donovan as labor
secretary. Former S. C.
Governor Jim Edwards is
reported to have the inside track
to become Secretary of Energy.
The 96th Congress which will be
remembered for the Abscam
scandal, adjourned Tuesday.
When the next congress convenes
Jan. 5, Republicans will control
the Senate for the first time since
1955. Democrats will retain their
majority in the House. Both
houses will be more
conservative.
The Polk Central Band will
present their annual Christmas
Concert tonight at 7:30 in the
Stearns School Auditorium in
Columbus.
Saturday the Landrum Band
Christmas Parade is at 10 a.m.
and the Columbus Christmas
Parade is Saturday at 2 p.m.
The Polk County Courthouse
will be closed Dec. 24, 25, 26 and
Jan. 1st.
Lose 232 Pounds
Last Monday evening's session
was the grand finale for the
enrollees for Wa-Rite the weight-
control program that began
eleven weeks ago in the l-andrum
First Baptist Church.
Of the eighteen persons
finishing, Judson Woodruff of
Landrum was the champion, with
a loss of 23'2 pounds. The
recommended loss is 2 pounds
per week for a continuing
program of weight loss and good
nutrition.
Nine had lost 10 to 20 pounds,
and the total net loss for the
group was 157. Fifteen who failed
to complete the course shed
another 75 pounds
Eleven showed improved blood
pressure. Dr. Roy Morgan
reported that all present Monday
night had normal blood pressure,
a marked improvement over the
readings at the opening session
The program was sponsored by
'he Tryon Seventh-day Adventist
Church. Leaders were Mrs.
Frank Carruth and Mrs. Fred
Wier.

Nominated For
Naval Academy
Michael Scott Cochran, son of
Mr. and Mrs. James Cochran of
RI. 1, Tryon, has been nominated
for an appointment to the U. S.
Naval Academy by Congressman
Lamar Gudgcr.
Michael is a senior at Polk
Central High School.
Passes Exam
Edward T Delehanty of Lake
Lanier was notified on Dec. 15 by
the Internal Revenue Service
that he had passed the Special
Enrollment Examination and
thus was eligible to apply for
enrollment to practice before the
internal Revenue Service This
written examination covers
Federal taxation and tax
accounting and the use of tax
return foims for individuals,
partnerships, corporations,
trusts, estates, and gifts. It also
covers ethical consideration and
proceduals requirements. It is a
four part test requiring two days
lo complete
The questions in the 1980
examination were directed
toward the tasks which enrolled
agents must preform to complete
and file forms and tax returns
and to represent clients before
the Internal Revenue Service.
