Strange Light;
Forest Fire
There was lots of excitement in
the area Saturday night as there
were reports of UFOs, airplane
crash.etc.
Shortly after 9 p m Saturday
people from a wide area reported
seeing a glowing object which
lighted the sky. The only possible
explaination was a meteorite or a
satelite burnin g as they hit the
earth’s atmosphere.
About 11 p.m. there was a
forest fire near the power line
which goes over the gap between
Melrose Mtn and Rock Spur and
the reports were going out that
there had been a plane crash in
the area.
Tryon Police Chief Jerry Ross
was the first officer on the scene
and he slated that there was no
plane wreckage but that he had
found some fireworks and he
believed the fire to have been
started by youths shooting
fireworks off the mountain. Local
rescue squad and police took part
in the search.
The fire according to reports
burned about 15 to 20 acres
