According to reports the U. S.
and Iran have an agreement on
the release of the hostages. As we
were going to press Monday, the
hostages were reported to be on
the plane, but still awaiting a
final detail on financial
arrangements.
The inauguration of Ronald
Reagan of the United States takes
place today in Washington.
The entire area is extremely
dry. Until we get a good rain
everyone should be careful with
discarded cigarettes, matches,
ashes from the fireplace or wood
stove.
One of our sad tasks is writing
obituaries when friends die.
Those of us who deal daily with
the Postal Service, realize what a
loss it is when an employee like
Gilmer Lynch dies. He was
accommodating and went out of
his way to help patrons of the post
office. He didn’t do just his job.
but more than he was expected
to do. He had recently been
transferred to the Spartanburg
Post Office.

Fires! Fires! Fires!
The Columbus Fire
Department has been working
overtime in responding to fires
Sunday at 12:01 a.m. they were
called to the Charles Blackwell
residence on Houston Road to a
chimney fire. No damage was
done to the house.
Sunday at 1:15 p.m. they were
called to a grass and woods fire
off Hwy. 108 opposite Wheaton
Industry. About b acre was
burned.
Sunday at 2 p.m. there was a
woods fire near the Leslie
Watkins residence in the Beulah
Community which burned about 3
acres.
Monday at 2:30 a.m the
firemen were called to the fire off
1-26 which ended up burning
several hundred acres
Monday at 11 a m. they were
called to a woods fire off Peniel
Road where some fireplace ashes
had started the fire.
AARP Meets Today
The Polk County Chapter of
AARP will meet today Tuesday)
at 2 p m at the Meeting Place.
The guest speaker will be Russell
J Constance of Tryon Federal
Savings and Loan who will speak
on Handy Facilities Effecting the
Retired Today.
Refreshments after the
meeting.

returned home to Warrior Drive.
Tryon after a month in Cape
Coral. Florida
Big Fire
A woods fire burned several
hundred acres along I-26 early
Monday morning. The area from
near Hershal Newman’s to
Skyuka Road was burned and
several of the residents were
getting ready to evacuate. The
fire jumped the highway medium
and burned on both sides of I-26.
According to reports one vehicle
belonging to a member of the
Saluda Volunteer Fire
Department which was parked
off 1-26 was burned and two other
vehicles were burned.
A trucker travelling 1-26 turned
in the alarm by CB radio about
2:30 a.m. Monday. Fire
Departments from Columbus,
Tryon and Saluda responded to
the scene. The high wind and dry
condtions made the fire very
difficult to fight. About noon
Monday the fire was reported
under control The fire fighters
from the Forestry Service
remained on the scene, but the
firemen and their trucks
returned to their fire stations
A New Arrival
Mr and Mrs. Maynard
McGuinn of Mill Spring are
parents of a daughter. Lougenia
Renee, born Jan. 17th at St.
Luke's hospital.
The maternal grandparents
are Mr. and Mrs Backcus Gregg
of Rutherfordton
The paternal grandmother is
Marie Sain of Mill Spring The
paternal grandfather is Eddie
McGuinn of Mill Spring
Injured In Wreck
A one car accident occurcd
early Saturday morning on Hwy
176 near Pacolet River
Plantation. The car travelling
west went out of control on a
curve and wrecked. Steve Pierce
and Eddie Jackson were taken to
St Luke's Hospital where Mr.
Pierce was treated and released
and Mr. Jackson was reported in
stable condition Monday
morning.
Gilmer Lynch
Gilmer Lynch died
unexpectedly Monday morning at
his home in Tryon.
A native of Polk County, he was
the son of the late John G and
Mildred Womack Lynch He was
a graduate of Mill Spring High
School and served in the U. S
Navy during the Korean Conflict
He worked at the Tryon Post
Office where he had been the
Supervisor of Postal Operations
and was recently assigned to
Spartanburg as Supervisor of
Window' Operation
He had been active in the Polk
County Little League program
He is survived by his wife the
former Jean Cochran, a
daughter. Miss Nancy Lynch and
a son. Joey Lynch; two sisters.
Mrs Thelma Rudolph and Mrs
Jean Williams, of Spartanburg; a
brother. Charles Lynch of
Bushnell. Fla
McFarland Funeral Chapel is
in charge of arrangements.
