During February the precipitation was 5.62 inches. The average for February is 5 66 inches. The precipitation to date is 6.01 inches and the average to date is 10.59 inches, leaving a deficit of 4.58 inches since Jan. 1. Sunday was another pretty day, but no official weather report. Monday was more like March — sunny and windy. A young Rutherford County man was injured Sunday when he fell from a spot on Shumont Mountain near Lake Lure. Authorities said 25 year old Jeff Rollins was found about 600 ft. below the peak of the mountain, although it was not believed he fell the entire 600 feet. Rescue Squads were forced to work their way down the mountain, strap the man into a basket-like stretcher, then climb back up the mountain. He was taken to Rutherford Hospital and then transferred to a Spartanburg Hospital. The Polk County Historical Association will meet today at 2:30 p.m. at the Polk County Library in Columbus. For information call 859-5387. Woods Fire The Tryon Volunteer Fire Department was called out Saturday about 8:30 p.m. to a brush fire near Keith Kuykendall's off old No. 19 Hwy. Some sparks escaped from a trash burner and set the woods on fire. The fire had been put out with a garden hose when the firemen arrived. Visits Converse Jane M. Schairer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred M. Schairer of Tryon, participated recently in Converese College’s "Insight '81" activities. Jane is a senior at Tryon High School. "Insight '81" is a program for students who nave been offered fall admission to Converse. They are given the opportunity to become acquainted with future classmates, talk with faculty and students about current programs, and to meet with the Converse Women’s Center staff for workshops. Two Polk Teams In District Finals The Polk Central girls and the Tryon boys will play in the District 1-A basketball finals tonight at Tuscola High School al Lake Junaluska. Both teams will play Hiwassee Dam with the girls game at 7 o’clock and the boys at 8:30. The winners of the these games will go thte State Tournament at Elon College. This is the first time for the Polk Central girls, who have surprised everyone with their upset wins over Robbinsville and Edneyville. The Tryon boys captured the District two years ago and were upset by Cullowhee in overtime last year in the finals. A large number of fans should be on hand tonight pulling for the two Polk County Schools. Landrum Boys In Playoff Tonight The Landrum High School boys basketball team will play Jonesville tonight at 7:30 at Landrum in the first round of the State Class A playoffs. Revival At Oak Grove The Oak Grove Baptist Church near Landrum will hold a revival March 8 — 12 at 7:30 each night. Evangelist Donny Gray will do the preaching and there will be special music each evening Rev. Ralph Jett is the pastor. Civic League Meets Friday The Civic League of Landrum will meet Friday, March G at 3 p.m. at the Civic Center in Landrum. Mrs. Leo Frank, Pres., will preside over the business meeting. Dr. Dudley Stroup, retired pastor of the Holy Cross Episcopal Church of Tryon will be the guest speaker. He will explain the "Hospice Program" as it relates to people today Mrs Lillian Banta is in charge of the program. Hostesses for the afternoon will be Miss Anne Sevier, Mrs. Nell Fitch, Mrs. Lorena Spratt and Mrs Marie Wilson. Guests are welcome. VFW Meets Tonight VFW Post 9116 and Ladies Auxiliary will meet tonight (Tues.) at 7:30 p.m. in the Columbus Town Hall. Daffy Jills Meet Thursday Daffy Jills Garden Club will meet Thursday. March Sth at 1:30 p m. with Mrs. R. H. Blanchard Mrs. Elizabeth Austin from Greenville, S. C. will have the program on birds. Members are asked to bring their horticulture report.
