GE Requests
To Be Taken Off
Bidders’ List
The County Commissioners
held their regular meeting at 3:00
p.m. on 2 March, 1981.
Commissioner Sauve reported
that she called up state
Representative Edith Lutz and
suggested that all three of our
representatives be invited to a
public hearing on the Harmon
Field financial problems. Lutz
thinks it is a good idea, and a
public hearing, for all residents
of Polk County to give their
views, is set for 8:00 p.m. on 13
March in the Courtroom.
Don Williams questioned the
acceptance of the Motorola bid on
the communications equipment.
Chairman Arledge stated that Ed
Whitely, of GE, felt the GE
equipment might not hook up
with the existing Motorola
equipment. Commissioner Butler
agreed with Williams but
stressed that the vote has been
taken and that the county was
going to go with Motorola. He
also read a strongly worded letter
from a GE representative in
which he disagreed with the
commissioners’ vote and
requested that GE be taken off
the bidders' list. Arledge and
Sauve voted to take such action,
and Butler abstained.
Williams, who is a trucker,
spoke about the causes of the
recent truck accident, and
pointed out the lack of warnings
as one comes off the 1-26 ramp at

School Board
Approves Band Trip
The Tryon School Board met
Monday evening. 2 March, 1981,
with all members present. In old
business, the building program is
progressing, the new heating
system is functioning, and the
new computer program is
expected to run into financial
trouble. Before the Southern
Association of Colleges and
Schools study on 22 April, new
toilet stalls in the elementary and
middle schools will need to be
installed. Those in the
elementary school were installed
in 1969 and are rusting out. This
was approved if money is found.
Mr. Laorenza described the
planned band trip to Baltimore 9-
12 May. When asked if there were
any objections to the trip, he turn-
ea the meeting over to Mrs.
Wolfgang Lonnes who feels that
in this time of inflation the trip is
an extravagance. Three of the
older band members have
already opted to go on a Special
Education trip, and others may
not be able to pay the estimated
$50 for food. Also a bus and new
uniforms are needed.
Mr. Laorenza read a list of 12
advantages of taking a band trip,
including motivation. Mrs. Eloise
Johnson, Secretary of the
Boosters, reported that the Band
Boosters had a majority vote to
?m^ S l lri P' 11 was Pointed out
that the band members worked to
earn money specifically to take a
trip. The Board felt that since the
youngsters worked on the belief
