The March Lion really roared Monday. Most of us are ready for the lamb to show up now. The strongwinds have made the leaves and dead grass very dry. All of us should be extremely careful of our cigarettes and how we dispose of them All outside burning has been banned. Thursday from 6:30 to 8 p m. is the Lamb or Chicken Dinner at St. Luke's C.M.E. Church. The Spelling Bee is Thursday at 10 a m. at the Tryon Elementary School auditorium. Friday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. is the Spaghetti Supper at Polk Central High School. Friday at 7 p.m. the Tryon Tigers play Pantego in the Greensboro Colesium. Saturday is Super Saturday. The Children's Theater Festival begins Friday at 8:30 with Robin Hood. The Polk County Republican Convention is Saturday at 10 a m. at the courthouse in Columbus. Sunday the annual Greenville County Hounds Hunter Pace will be held at 1:30 p.m. at Wright Way Farms in Gowensville. TRYON, N. C. 28782 WED., MAR. 18.1981 Price 10c Per Cop: Big Wind The area was hit by a fierce March wind as it roared through Monday. The upper shed at Harmon Field lost the roof over about 26 horse stalls. Duke Power reported that about 500 homes were without electricity as trees went down over lines and over the area. Some homes were without electricity from about 3 p m. Monday to 6 a m. Tuesday. The Duke Power crews were out all night repairing lines. A tree went down on Elbert Carpenter’s house on Meadowlark Drive and knocked several holes in the roof. There were a number of instances of minor damages to signs, roof, etc. Change In Place For Saluda Precinct John Rhodes, chairman of the Saluda Democratic Precinct Committee reports that the Precinct Meeting will be held March 26th at 8 p.m at the Saluda City Hall instead of the Polling Place. Mr. Rhodes said that new officers and delegates to the County Convention would be elected at this time. Fire The Columbus Volunteer Fire Department was called to a grass fire Monday about 10:30 a.m. near the home of Mrs. Pat Lyons on Fox Mtn. Road. Fires The Tryon Volunteer Fire Department was called out three times Monday during the wind storm. They were called to a woods fire at Hillswick and Carolina Drive where a tree went across a power line and the hot line caught the leaves on fire They were called to a chimney fire at Mrs. Gladys Peak's house and then to a chimney fire at Elmo Neal’s house. Tryon High fans will be leaving Friday for the Greensboro Colesium to see Tryon play Pantego in the State Class 1-A finals at 7 p.m. Athletic Director Geoffrey Tennant recommends this route to the game: Take N. C. 108 to U. S. 64 in Rutherfordton. Take U. S. 64 East from Rutherfordton to Morganton. Take 1-40 East from Morganton to Greensboro. I High Point Road Greensboro Coliseum “Egyptian Trip” At Rotary-Friday The Tryon Rotary Club will present at its Friday. March 20th meeting a program by Dave Kirby. He will present a movie he took of his Egyptian Trip Kirby is from Tryon. This program will be presented in 2 parts. 1st part, March 20th and conclusion on Friday, March 27. The Tryon Rotary Club meets on Fridays at 12:30 at the Pacolet River Plantation. Landrum Blasts Patriots 11-1 The Landrum Cardinals opened their baseball season Monday with an 11-1 win over the Polk Central Patriots at Landrum. Jimmy Pruitt banged out three hits, including a solo home run and Gary Tucker added two more hits. Todd Hardin was the winning pitcher and allowed Polk Central only one hit in five innings, Keith Rhymer was the losing pitcher Forest Fire A forest fire was being battled Monday by the Greenville County Forest Service in the gap area between Hogback Mtn. and Rocky Spur.
