32. Wednesday was another
beautiful spring day.
Despite moderating food
prices, a huge jump in gasoline
and fuel oil rates pushed the
nation’s cost of living up last
month at an annual rate of 12.1
percent, the government said
Tuesday.
Wednesday’s Spartanburg
Herald had a story about a
fishing outing by Paul Rollins and
Paul Hicks which turned into a
cold night on an island in Lake
Moultrie. Mr. Rollins is an
attorney with offices in Landrum
and Spartanburg. Rollin's bass
fishing boat took on water Sunday
morning, forcing the two men
into the cold water. They dragged
the 17 foot boat to an island where
it took two hours to start a fire in
the driving rain. Rescue
personnel spotted the fire in
Monday’s wee hours and reached
the refuge at about 7 a.m.
According to the Herald, Rollins
was in his office Tuesday showing
no physical effects from the
ordeal. Hucks, president of P.
Garvan Co., was not that
fortunate. Mary Black Hospital
gave his condition as ‘'guarded"
late Tuesday. He is under

The Polk County Sheriff's
Department has a new number.
In addition to the old number 894-
8244 the new number is 894-3001.
New Planting
At Post Office
Have you noticed the new
planting which enhances the area
in front of the Post Office?
Rhododendron. Camellias and
Azaleas will provide a succession
of color with Blue Rug Juniper
as a contrast.
The Daffy Jills Garden Club is
responsible for this bit of
beautification. Proceeds from
their annual card party were
used for this project, and also as
a contribution to the planting
around the Cowan Memorial
Garden on Trade St.
Prize winners at the card party
were Mrs David Hart for highest
score and Mrs. Charles Stratford,
door prize.
Special Meeting For
P.C. School Board
There will be a special meeting
of the Polk County Board of
Education on Monday, April 6, at
7:30 p.m. in the Board of
Education office. The Board will
move immediately into
Executive session to discuss
personnel matters. There will be
NO board action following the
session.
Cleanup Of
Landrum Cemetery
The Civic League of Landrum
will be cleaning the Landrum
Cemetery Saturday morning at
9:00 a.m. This is a big project as
there are no provisions for care of
the cemetery other than that
done by individuals. League
members will appreciate any
volunteers — Bring your rake.
Persons desiring to make a
donation for the up keep of the
cemetery may do so by sending it
to Mrs. Noah Daniel, Oakleaf
Drive, Landrum.
Should there be rain the clean
up will be on Saturday, April 4th.
Monroe Turner
A. Monroe Turner, 75, husband-
of Mariel Wilhoite Turner, 121
Forest Lane, Tryon died
Wednesday morning at his home.
He was born in Knightstown,
Indiana and had made his home
here since 1971. He was a
graduate of Yale Unversity and a
member of Vernon Hall Club and
Phi Gamma Delta. He was in the
construction business in Chicago
and was President of A. M.
Turner Co., Engineers and
Contractors. He was a
commander in the U. S Naw in
WWII. y
He was a member of the Tryon
Painters and Sculptors. He had
an exhibition of watercolor
paintings at the Tryon Fine Arts
Center in February of 1974,
There will be no services.
McFarland Funeral Chapel is
in charge of arrangements.
Daffy Jills
Garden Club
The Daffy Jills Garden Club
will meet Thursday, April 2 at
1:30 p.m. at the home of Mrs.
Ralph Benedict, 120 Country Club
Heights. Go-hostesses are Mrs. H
J. Deobald, Mrs. Allan Safford,
and Mrs F W Sandels.
Spring flower arrangements
will be demonstrated by Mrs. A
H. Blanchard, Mrs. Ralph
Milner, Mrs. Dudley Stroup and
Mrs. James H. Davis.
The Benedicts will have an
exhibit of their bonzai plants.
Thermal Belt BPWC
Meets April 2
The Thermal Belt Business
and Professional Women’s Club
will meet Thursday, April 2 at
7:00 p.m. at the Pacolet River
Plantation.
Tina Sanders, Chairman of the
Membership Committee, will
speak on “Anesthesia” and will
present a short film on the
subject.
There will also be a “White
Elephant Auction”. All members
are asked to contribute items or
services which will be awarded to
the highest bidder. The proceeds
will go toward the Club's
scholarship fund and sending
delegates to Girls State in both
North and South Carolina
Reservations should be
cancelled by Monday, March 30.
Guests may made reservations
