The Steeplechase
By Eugene-Warner
Like springtime, steeplechase
news is bustin' out all over:
Prince Charles, adding a touch
of class to the sport, fell off his
horse not once but twice, in two
steeplechase races in full view of
the world's television audiences,
including his mother-in-law to be.
Public television (PBS)
announced a new mystery series
starting next Tuesday entitled
“The Racing Game” written by a
very good writer, Dick Francis, a
former amateur steeplechase
jockey in England.
The Carolina Cup is to be seen
at Camden this weekend. It’s said
to be the world’s biggest cocktail
party. The thoroughbreds ran at
Aiken last week.
The Block House races will be
run at Tryon next weekend, the
first Saturday in April, it's said to
be the most charming of the Dixie
spring horse festivals.
There are no records of the
event but probably the first
steeplchase took place when a
wild mastodon chased a caveman
over a course of rocks, rivers and
ravines way, way back in the
ages dark Since then a man on a
horse has been timed at 43 mph
over a slightly less worrisome
course at Tryon
There is a record of the first
steeplechase at Tryon. It took
place two miles from the present
race site. The prize was a tin cup
suitable for street corner
begging. The prizes this year are
considerably more grand —

Commissioners Ask
For Meeting
The Polk County Board of
Commissioners has asked the
Polk County Soil and Water
Conservation District Board for a
meeting to discuss the matter of
funding. The Commissioners met
with Senator Bo Thomas last
Saturday to discuss the special
bill he has introduced to provide
the Soil and Water Conservation
District Board with up to .044
cents per one hundred dollars
valuation of listed real and
personal property. The Polk
County Commissioners feel that
Senate Bill 222 is unfair to the
taxpayers of Polk County and
that this bill will set a percedent
that will change the structure of
both state and local governments
in North Carolina.
The financing struggle goes
back two years when the County
Commissioners cut back on the
Soil and Water Conservation
program so drastically that they
couldn't pay for a secretary and
office expenses while they had a
soil conservationist present in the
county full time to catch up on the
backlog of work. The Soil
Conservation Board had to
borrow from a fund set for the
purchase of equipment to meet
their expenses.
The Soil and Water
Conservation Board consists of
Hubert McEntyre, chairman;
Bernard Womack, Arthur Pack,
Gilbert Smothers and Dock
Wilson. Mr. McEntyre stated that
the Soil and Water Conservation
