Haig, Jr. was upset because he wasn’t given crisis command authority by the White House. Haig is unhappy that Vice President George Bush was named chairman of the “crisis management team. Mrs Lynne Wood, director of the Polk County Sheltered Workshop was honored last Friday at the Jefferson Award luncheon held at the Poinsett Club in Greenville, S. C. Mrs. Wood was one of 6 Carolinians who received a Jefferson Award. Her name was also advanced to the national competition. The Jefferson Awards are given to recognize the dedication, sacrifice and accomplishments of individuals serving the American people. Recipients have included Hubert Humphrey, Henry Kessinger, Cyrus Vance, etc. The Jefferson Awards and the American Institute for Public Service were founded in 1976 to honor the highest ideals and achievements in the field of public service. C. 28782 The Steeplechase By Eugene-Warner Like springtime, steeplechase news is bustin' out all over: Prince Charles, adding a touch of class to the sport, fell off his horse not once but twice, in two steeplechase races in full view of the world's television audiences, including his mother-in-law to be. Public television (PBS) announced a new mystery series starting next Tuesday entitled “The Racing Game” written by a very good writer, Dick Francis, a former amateur steeplechase jockey in England. The Carolina Cup is to be seen at Camden this weekend. It’s said to be the world’s biggest cocktail party. The thoroughbreds ran at Aiken last week. The Block House races will be run at Tryon next weekend, the first Saturday in April, it's said to be the most charming of the Dixie spring horse festivals. There are no records of the event but probably the first steeplchase took place when a wild mastodon chased a caveman over a course of rocks, rivers and ravines way, way back in the ages dark Since then a man on a horse has been timed at 43 mph over a slightly less worrisome course at Tryon There is a record of the first steeplechase at Tryon. It took place two miles from the present race site. The prize was a tin cup suitable for street corner begging. London (Valerie Johnson) and daughters, Cindy e ’ ?[ Bay Village ' Ohi ° are spending their vacation with Mrs London s mother, Mrs. James E Johnson of Pacolet Valley 14 Pages Today Price 10c Per Cop; Commissioners Ask For Meeting The Polk County Board of Commissioners has asked the Polk County Soil and Water Conservation District Board for a meeting to discuss the matter of funding. The Commissioners met with Senator Bo Thomas last Saturday to discuss the special bill he has introduced to provide the Soil and Water Conservation District Board with up to .044 cents per one hundred dollars valuation of listed real and personal property. The Polk County Commissioners feel that Senate Bill 222 is unfair to the taxpayers of Polk County and that this bill will set a percedent that will change the structure of both state and local governments in North Carolina. The financing struggle goes back two years when the County Commissioners cut back on the Soil and Water Conservation program so drastically that they couldn't pay for a secretary and office expenses while they had a soil conservationist present in the county full time to catch up on the backlog of work. The Soil Conservation Board had to borrow from a fund set for the purchase of equipment to meet their expenses. The Soil and Water Conservation Board consists of Hubert McEntyre, chairman; Bernard Womack, Arthur Pack, Gilbert Smothers and Dock Wilson.
