Halting more than a decade of increased auto regulations the Reagan administration said Monday it will relax or eliminate 34 pollution and safety rules to help the troubled American auto industry Bob Terrell, Asheville Citizen Columnist devoted much of his column Tuesday to "Tryon Day” — A Great Idea Doug Rogers, the boys basketball coach at Rosman High School for the past three years has been named the new basketball mentor at Brevard College The Thermal Belt Health Fair is Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Episcopal Church of Holy Cross The Junior Horse Show is Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Cotton (Continued On Back Page) Tryon Receives $50,000 Grant The Town of Tryon has received approval from the Appalachian Regional Commission of a $50,000 grant to be used with the Town’s HUD Community Development Project Grant Mayor Ken Tucker stated that this grant would be used to upgrade water and fire protection along Peak Street and Jackson Street Extension, and also to provide for the construction of new sewer lines along Peak Street and Jackson Street Extension. The Grant will also include the cleaning and dredging of the creek along East Howard Street from Oak Street to Vaughn Street. This work should start in mid-May Mayor Tucker reported Fire The Tryon Volunteer Fire Dept, was called out Monday noon to a grass fire near the Howard Street ball field. A pick- up truck was reported stuck, and in an effort to get out the exhaust set the grass on fire. “He Really Lives” "He Really Lives”, a half-hour color film, will be shown at 6 p m Saturday, April 11 in the Tryon Seventh-day Adventist Church. The story of Jesus’ passion and resurrection is told in a unique way by the Sylwester puppets The public is invited. Wanda Starling Young Careerist For District Wanda J. Starling won the title of Young Careerist for District I at the annual meeting of the Western N. C. BPW Clubs on Sunday, April 5 in Franklin. Wanda, who represented the Thermal Belt BPW Club, was one of nine young women competing for this honor. Wanda is a nurse in the Progressive Cardiac Unit at Spartanburg General Hospital. She is also a full time student at the University of S. C. at Spartanburg. She is married to Eugene D Starling, who is co- owner of Starway Finance Co. in Landrum She will compete at the state competition in June Other members of the Thermal Belt BPW Club attending this meeting were Linda Marston, Linda Haynes, Lynn Scoggins, Mary Duncan, Sarah Edwards, Judy Arledge and Myrtle Littlefield. Mrs Marston, president, gave a speech on the accomplishments of the Club during the past year. Other speakers included Doris Foster, District Director, who presided over the meeting; Hazel Andrews, who spoke on the responsibilities of officers and other members; Laura Williams, former State Federation President, who explained the meaning of the BPW Emblem; and Margaret Bisecker, State (Continued On Back Page) Jim C. Green Is Honored The Catawba Valley History Association recently presented its 8th annual Associate of the Year award to Jim C. Green, Hickory - area sales representative, for Exeltor, a Canadian based company and a primary supplier of needles to the hosiery industry. Mr Green has been located in the Hickory area for only one year and the award had never before been received by Exeltor. Several of the company’s top executives flew in to attend the awards ceremony held at Lake Hickory Country Club. In appreciation for winning the award Jim and his wife have been offered a two week tour of Canada which they plan to enjoy this summer. Mr. Green formerly lived in Landrum and Tryon and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John C. Green of Landrum. He is married to the former Vicka Bryant of Spartanburg who is a Special Education teacher in the Hickory school system. They live on Lake Hickory and are members of the Lake Hickory Country Club where Mr Green pursues his love of golfing. Mr. and Mrs. Toby Vosburgh have returned to Charlotte after spending the weekend with Mr. Vosburgh’s mother, Mrs Ed King and family Mr. Vosburgh is with All State Insurance.
