Astronauts John Young and
Robert Crippen were scheduled
to have been launched into space
this morning if all went well.
They will be aboard the first ship
created to make space travel as
routine as an overseas airline
flight. Because it is a test of
machinery, their mission will be

make it up and down again

Gen. Omar N. Bradley, who led
a million U. S. soldiers in World
War II and was the nation’s last
five-star general, died
Wednesday at the age of 88 in
New York. He was also the
nation’s first chairman of the
Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Presbyterian Church is “The
Days of His Passion " Services
will be held Monday through
Thursday at 11:30 a m. to 12 noon
The Good Friday service will be
at 12 noon and
interdemoninational at Holy
Cross Episcopal Church.
There will be special Palm
Sunday observance Sunday at 11
a.m. as well as an Easter Sunrise
Service at 7 a.m. followed by
breakfast. The traditional Easter
service will be at 11 a.m.
$10,000 Appropriated
The Polk County Commission
ers Monday voted to appropriate
$10,000 for the Polk County Soil
and Water Conservation District
for the year 1981-82 after the
withdrawal of Senate Bill 222.

Holy Week And
Easter Services
At Good Shepherd
The Good Shepherd Episcopal
Church is observing Holy Week
and Easter. On Palm Sunday
there will be a Celebration of
Holy Communion at 9:30 a m.
Maundy Thursday will be
observed at 8 p.m. and the Good
Friday service is at 8 p.m.
The Easter Holy Communion
will be at 9:30 a.m.
Rotary Chorus
Elects Officers
At the annual meeting of the
Rotary Community Chorus on
April 6th the following chorus
members were elected officers
and directors for two-year terms:
President, David Halliday; Vice
Pres., George Stothoff; Sec.,
Joan Lonnes; Director, Emma
Pruette. The other four present
directors elected by and from the
Tryon Rotary Club will continue
in office.
The Chorus will present its
spring concert, "Spring Fever",
on May 16 and 17 at the Fine Arts
Center.
Oakland Raiders guard Mickey
Marvin and his wife, Lisa, spoke
to Sth and 6th graders last week
at 0. P. Earle School in
Landrum.
R-S Central tennis team
defeated Polk Central 9-0 in
straight sets on April 2nd.
