Friday morning was a perfect spring day. If we will just open our eyes and see the dogwoods, azaleas, etc. in bloom, we won’t see anything any lovelier. The Columbia space shuttle blast off was postponed Friday morning due to a computer failure. The next attempt was scheduled for Sunday morning at Cape Canaveral, Fla. Friday the response to the Health Fair was overwhelming. All the parking spaces in the Episcopal Church area were filled and there was a small traffic jam on Melrose Ave. Lots of planning and volunteer work went into the Health Fair to make it such a success. This is being written before Tryon Day on Saturday, but every indication pointed to a successful event. A news release from N. C. State University reported that shortstop Mike Sprouse of Tryon was batting .241 in 29 games. He had been at bat 87 times, scored 26 runs, had 21 hits and driven in 8 RBIs. He had 5 doubles, 1 triple and had 2 stolen bases in 3 attempts. Mike was an outstanding athlete at Tryon (Continued On Back Page) TRYON. N. C. 28782 Special Meeting Today For Commissioners The Polk County Commission ers will hold a special meeting today at 12 noon in the Com missioners Meeting Room in the courthouse annex. Two items on the agenda are: 1. Community Development Resolution and 2. Approve bills. Wreck Thursday A 2-car accident took place Thursday at 4:50 p.m. at the junction of Hwy. 176 and McCown St. in Tryon. Mrs. Nancy Trask, driving a 1981 Ford was heading south on Hwy. 176 and Mrs. Eugenia Walcott driving a 1974 Chevrolet was heading north on Hwy. 176. Tryon Police Officer Billy Steppe stated that Mrs. Walcott’s car turned into the path of Mrs. Trask’s vehicle. Officer Steppe said that Mrs. Trask had two passengers in her car, but that no one was seriously injured The new Ford was totaled and about $300 damage was done to the 1974 Chevrolet according to Officer Steppe. Cross Lighting The Cross on Tryon Peak will be lighted at 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 14. The Lions Club of Columbus invites everyone to pause for prayer at 8 p.m. Tuesday to call attention to the lighted Cross — that symbolizes hope for the world. MONDAY, APRIL 13,1981 To Speak Here Author Doris Betts Response to the announcement of author Doris Betts' visit to Polk County on April 14 and 15 has been enthusiastic, reports Polk County Superintendent of Schools, Larry Coble. Two area residents in particular "enjoyed every minute" of the weekend they spent in Chapel Hill last fall listening to Professor Betts. Enrolled in a special humanities series at UNC were Ruth McIlwain and Marian Fischer of Columbus, who say they could have "sat and listened to Doris Belts for another two days” as she told about her own writing and teaching experiences and talked about the literary of work of other writers as well as her own. "She’s the kind of person who can get a point across," says Mrs. McIlwain. “She's both easy- IContinued On Back Page) Price 10c Per Copy BPW Paper Drive Next Week The Thermal Belt Business and Professional Women's Club reminds all residents of their paper drive being held next week, April 21 through April 26. A trailer will be parked in the Community Cash parking lot in Landrum for the collection of newspapers, magazines, brown paper bags, cardboard, catalogs, books and corrugated boxes. (Books must have covers removed; corrugated boxes must be knocked down, and newspapers must be tied together with no other items included or placed in brown paper bags. Plastic or waxed papers as well as absorbent papers cannot be accepted.) Residents are asked to place thier items for collection in the trailer which will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. Anyone unable to carry items to the trailer is asked to contact Linda Marston at 457-3113 as club members will pick up items from shut-ins on Saturday, April 18 Wins First Place Sean McGuinn, 7th grader at Tryon Elementary School, won 1st award at the Science Fair in the Elementary Division at Isothermal Community College and also $50. The project was on Biology and the effect of the sun on germination of plants. Sean is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Terry McGuinn.
