This year's first cases of Rocky-
Mountain Spotted Fever have
been reported in Spartanburg
and Cherokee counties. Five
cases had been reported as of last
Thursday.
The Landrum Lions Club will
car pool at the Landrum Civic
Center Tuesday at 6:15 p m. to go
to Camp Skyuka on White Oak
Mountain where they will enjoy
an outdoor meal and tour the
camp
The Polk County
Commissioners meet today at 3
p.m. at the courthouse in
Columbus.
The Tryon School Board meets
tonight at 7:30 at the high school

that during March the statewide
unemployment figure was 6 9

The Red Cross, which already
is planning for the next visit of
the Bloodmobile. wants to remind
potential donors to circle

will meet Monday at 7 p m at the

Award-winning children's
author. Carole Marsh, will be at
Tryon Elementary School
Tuesday to talk about and
autograph copies of her History-
Mystery Books. Ms Marsh who
lives on Melrose Mountain is
working on more History
Mystery books for her Real
People/Real Places series. Area
teachers, librarians and others
have also been invited to the
Tryon Elementary School to
meet the author.
Wires Beware
A truck coming through Tryon
late Thursday afternoon caused
some problems The truck had a
high tank on the back and it
caught some telephone wires and
a guy wire at Tryon Fuel Supply.
As night was approaching, the
truck parked here overnight and
was escorted out of the county
Friday morning by two telephone
trucks which checked wires over
the road for clearance

Horse Show Sunday
Ulf and Lise Ann Storemark of
Earl's Court. Inman are hosting a
Horse Show Sunday from 9 a m
to6p.m. Mr and Mrs. Storemark
came here 14 years ago from
Oslo. Norway They conduct a
riding school and the riding
program at Converse College.
Gerald Pack will bring the
Greenville Hounds and Chapman
High School band will play. There
is no admission.
VYW Meets Tues.
The VFW Post 9116 will meet
Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the
Columbus Town Hall. The newly
elected officers will be installed
by Mike Hyatt. Dist.

The Auxiliary will meet at the

Scott Camp, corner of Peak and

Memorial Service
On Tuesday, April 28th a
memorial service for Lydia S
Holley was held in the auditorium
of the Mountain Area Health
Education Center. Ms. Holley
had been an Associate Professor
on the faculty there Because of
her acute interest in students,
MAHEC has established the
Lydia S. Holley Memorial Fund
to support students on rotation in
Western North Carolina

May Meeting
In conjunction with Solar
Energy Awareness Week, Dr
Robert Cole, Chairman of the
UNC-A Physics Department, will
present a program entitled
"Passive Solar Principles and
Economics” Thursday. May 14 at
7:30 pm. in the UNC-A
Humanities Lecture Hall. Dr
Cole has instructed classes in
solar energy and renewable
energy sources for the last seven
years at UNC-A He has been
interested in the historical uses of
solar energy and began research
in Tunisia last year in this area.
The meeting is open to the public
and refreshments will be served.
