President Reagan will propose several benefit changes in Social Security — including stiff penalties for persons who take early retirement — in an effort to stave off bankruptcy of the system. A Graduate Miss Julie Hill Pettigrew, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Shaw Pettigrew of Tryon received a B. A. from Duke University on Sunday, May 10th. Completes Course The Polk County School Food Service personnel have recently completed a 30-hour state approved course in "Overview In School Food Service." Mary Stevens of Swannanoa conducted the course supplied through Isothermal Community College as part of the continuing education program. In conjuction with the instruction, two field trips were made — one to Bell Distributing Wholesale Co. Food Show and one to Asheville Meat Packing Co. Food Show, both in Asheville. These courses are developed to motiviate child nutrition personnel to use their knowledge and skills to up grade the lunches served in school and to keep up with the fast moving changes in School Food Service. Those attending were Margo Villesenor. Jean Conner, Ruby Gilbert, Carrie Lee Garrett, Grace Metcalf, Judy Moore, Mildred Jackson, Judy Edwards, Joyce Ridings, Margaret Collins and Dot Owens. New Book Off The Press A new book, “Poems of Experience and Emotion" bv Della H. Jackson of Stony Knoll is off the press. During the next 60 days, 50% of the profit of the sale of the new book and her other book, “Special Approaches For Sunday Schools In Small Churches" will go to the Stony Knoll Community Library Fund to help in the Summer Recreation Program. Mrs. Jackson said that copies may be bought at The Bookshelf and James Bryan’s Store in Tryon; the Columbus Pharmacy in Columbus and Bobby Bishop’s Grocery in Mill Spring. Superior Rating Saturday, May 9th, the Instrumental Solo and Ensemble Contest was held at Western Carolina University. Heidi Faber, a Polk Central High School senior, played a clarinet solo and recieved a Superior (Class I) rating. She played "Sonata in F" by G. F. Gandel, and was accompanied by Ms. Pam McNeil on piano This is not her first attendance at this festival. She has previously received one superior and two excellent ratings for solos and duets, and has been a member of the Western District All-State Band Wind Ensemble. Heidi has been under the instruction of Allen Benson of the Converse College Music Department Homecoming Sunday at New Hope Church New Hope United Methodist Church will have Homecoming Sunday, May 17th. Sunday School will be at 10 a m worship service at 11 a.m. and dinner in the Fellowship Hall will be at 1 p.m. Gospel singing begins at 2 p.m. with The Master Singers of Chesnee and The Whisnant Family of Morganton bein^ present. Rev. Carroll Flack is th pastor. Mexican Archeology At Rotary Friday The Tryon Rotary Club will meet Friday at 12:30 p.m. at the Pacolet River Plantation. Mrs. Paul Muller will be the guest speaker, and she will talk on "An Overview of Mexican Archeology " Mrs. Muller holds a masters degree from the Interamerican University of Mexico and has participated in field and museum studies sponsored by the University of the Americas in Pueblo and the National Institute of Anthropology in Guanajuato.
